THE HON. D. BUDDO
PEEBS ASSOCIATION. ‘ , CHRISTCHURCH, May 21. The Hon. D. Buddo, Minister for Internal Affairs, arrived from the south by the first express to-day. The object of his visit to Southland, Mr Buddo stated to a reporter, was to see the old sawmill areas with a view to their settlement. A considerable area had been quite worked out. and settlement could proceed almost immediately. Other areas of considerable extent could be settled within twelve months. The land was Crown land, and parts of it had already been surveyed. In regard to tho census, Mr Buddo said that he anticipated receiving tho final figures next week. Tho returns so tar totalled beyond 800.000. Mr Buddo leit for Eautnora by the evening train. 1 Ho proceeds to Oxford on Monday, where ho receives several deputations and he will • then probably, have something to say about land settle-; mont. On Tuesday he returns to Wellington.
