KARORI BOROUGH COUNCIL

The Karori Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor (Mr C. I. Dasent) presiding. There were present—Councillors Cathie, Burn, Spiers, Standen, AVolling, Hildreth, Walmsley. Communications were received from Messrs Richardson, Blair and McCabe in regard to tho supply of sleepers. The Mayor stated that all the sleepers required wore now on tho work. On the motion of tho Mayor the appointment of Mr Robert Fletcher to fill the vacancy caused on the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board by tho resignation of Mr J. G. AV. Aitken was approved. Mr R. H. Wodde wrote resigning his position of commissioner of the sinking funds. ' A request to have tho name of Toll street put up and a light placed on the MU was referred to the lighting committee. A communication was received from the AVollington City Council in regard to loeqj 'bodies’ superannuation. The matter was considered last year but was not l dealt with at tho time.

The Mayor moved that the matter be referred to the finance committee. At the n' colin;' of the Petone Borough Council on the previous night it had been stated that the National Provident Fund would do away with these superannuation funds. The information asked for in the communication had been furnished some time ago. The motion was carried. In regard to a letter from the Council concerning a scheme for drainage of the eastern side of the Kaiwarra stream, the Town Clerk of the Wellington City Council forwarded tho report of the City Engineer on tho matter. This stated that tho request of tho JTarori Borough Council was somewhat vague. If the district which was proposed to be considered was brought into tho drainage system of Northland it might result in the increased diameters of the necessary sewors, and the council would be at 'additional expense as a consequence. A considerable amount of thought required to be given to evolve some scheme which would be fair and equitable to the city as well as tho owners of property in the area referred to. The storm-water of the greater portion of this area drained naturally to the Kaiwarra stream, and consequently discharged into the harbour. Without considerable/ expense in pumping, no other means of discharging could be pro. vided. Until a complete scheme was proposed ho could not report definitely on the proposal. The borough engineer reported that 112 sleepers came to hand on March Bth. 269 on March 15th, and 1152 on March 22nd, maldng a total of 1533. This number would complete the tramway to tho terminus. Fresh work was commenced on March 23rd, and platelaying on March 21-th. About 1000 feet of rails have been laid to date. The work has progressed slowly during the past four days on account of the smallness of tho gangs, but men are being taken on every day and it is expected the rails will be laid by April 12th rf the weather holds good.
