GENERAL CRONJE DEAD
A PICTURESQUE FIGURE
HERO OF THE SIEGE OF paardeberg. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copy riant (Received February 6, 0.20 a.m.) CAPETOWN, February 5. The death is announced of General Piet A. Cronje, of Boer War fame. Born about 1835, of Honpucnot 'descent. Cronje was the general commanding the Western Army of tho South African Republics in the late war. Ho surrendered with 4DDO men at Paardoberpr on February 27th. 1900 ithe anniversary of Alajuba), to c'leid’MarslLal Lord Roberta, alter lighting in which the British losses were very heavy. General Cronje was a member of the Executive Council of tho Old Transvaal Republic, and took part in the first Boer Avar. He besieged rotchefstroom in 1881, and received itis capitulation: he also frustrated tho Jameson raid at Krugersdorp in 1895.
