Entries wero timed to close yesterday, but lato ones will probably be received up to Monday. • Taranaki championships and Handicaps, at New' Plymouth.—January 26th, 27th, and 28th. Entries close with Mi E. Stocker, hon. secretary, on Monday, January 23rd. WELLINGTON PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. This year's big meeting at Masterton promises to be one of the finest in the history of the association, as the pick of New Zealand's leading tennis players will be competing, amongst the certainties being Swanston, Cox, Parker, Brown, Misses Travers, Nunneley, and Wellwood. All that is'required to stamp the tournament as par excellence is the attendance of 'Peacock and Fisher, the New Zealand champions, and for the benefit of the sport it is generally hoped that they will be competitors. . With the exception of the ladies' doubles, all of last year's champions will defend their titles, but there will be so many first-class players taking part in the meeting that piobably several new names will go on the province's roll of honour.

The tournament starts next Saturday morning and will be continued on Monday and Tuesday. Mr A. E, Sclanders, hon. secretary of tho Masterton Tennis Club, has the arrangements well in hand, and with an energetic committee is toiling strenuously to do justice to the importance of the occasion—the first time that tho provincial championships have been decided away from Wellington.

Additional interest will bo - lent to tho provincial championships at Masterton next Saturday by the presence of leading ' Canterbury representatives. Ollivier and Goss are said to be certainties, and Kiver will probably accompany them. As the talent will include all the leading players in New Zealand, tho tournament is bound to . excite even greater interest than the New Zealand championships. Miss E. Williams, the present holder of . the Wellington provincial ladies' doubles championship, along with Miss Nunneley, , had not intended being present, and the latter paired with Miss Simpson (Thorndon). The firstmentioned player, however, entered at the last moment, and partners Miss Hartgill and W. Goss respectively in the ladies' doubles and ' combined championships. Miss Simpson is reported to be playing with .G. G. Aitken in the oombined doubles. GENERAL NOTES. ■ The ontries for the men's second grade handicap singles, at the Matton tournament on December 26th and 27th, included some names that look strangely unfamiliar on a tennis programme: H. Tukere, W. Enua, T. Hiroti, H. Karatau, Paki Metekingi: Taranaki sent a strong contingent to the Rangitikei championships at Marton during Christmas week, amongst the number being E. D: and V. Wybourne, A. and S. Powdrell, H. D. and H. H. C. Caplen, W. 11. Swainson, and Misses M. and J. Wallace. With the province's own championships eventuating in less than'a fortnight it is hardly likely that many Taranaki players will be seen out at Dannevirke or Masterton (Miss Brewster competes at the former meeting).Cliff Dickie and S. Powdiell won the championship doubles at last year's Dannevirke tournament, defeating Fisher and Geo. Prouse, and they would be welcome if. they managed to get down again for, the 1911 championships commencing on Tuesday. The Wellington contingent for Masterton will include, in addition to the top-notchers, the following players:. H. M. Gore and M. E. Denniston (Thorndon), D. M. Kean (Biougham Hill), P. B. Wright, T. H. Jones, C. 11. Howden, and K. McKenzie (Muritai), E. Y. ißedward (Newtown), R. H. J. Beere (Victoria College). Miss K. M. Nunneley, the last of the visitors to the Blenheim carnival,, returned to. Wellington on Saturday night. She. will be a competitor at both Dannevirke and Masterton.

In' addition to Duncan and Austin, who came on to Pahiatua after the Hastings _ tournament, there were several otner competitors from Wellington at the former meeting, including Ma's Holmes (Thorndon),, Misses Curtis and TJdy (Petone), and Ponanga and Heketa (Hutt). The "all-blacks" reached the semi-final of the handicap doubles, whore they were compelled to default owing to early to town. Mrs Holmes was defeated in the semi-final of the championship singles by Miss N. L. Hughes after a very close finish (9—B). Entries for Dannevirke, all events, total 230; including representative players from Wellington, Hawke's Bay and Taranaki. Several New Zealand champions are amongst the competitors, the most notable being Parker, Cox, Fisher, Misses Travers, Nunneley and 11. Wellwood. Other well-known players taking part are Brown, Ebbett, W. H. Swainson, Misses Hartgill, E. Williams and Brewster.

HAWKE'S BAY CHAMPIONSHIPS. The annual open championship meeting of the Hawke's Bay Association was held at Napier on December 31st, January 2nd and 3rd, but owing to the laTge number of. events and .entries the tournament did not reach conclusion. HASTINGS CHAMPIONSHIP ANE HANDICAP TOURNAMENT. The tournament held at Hastings during Christmas -week was very successful, and attracted players from many parts

of the North Island, Napier, Dairae- i Tirke, Gisborne, and Wellington being : r 'presented. Amongst the competitors : •were- Cecil Cox, formerly champion of New Zealand, and SI-ss Ilartgill, lady ■ champion of Dannevirke. The circumstances made for a pleasant githering; courts in good order, beauti- , i'nl weather; whilst a great boon to the competitors was the arrangements for morning and afternoon tea, provided, as Usual, by the club. A popular win was that of Friday in the handicap singles (A gi-de). _____ rAHIATUA TOURNAMENT. The seventh annual tournament of the aouve club eventuated on January 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, under most favouiaole cii- j cunictauces. The entries were a record, totalling 17C, or 75 in" excess of last year. Aoout a dozen clubs were represented, a..d over seventy competitors took part. Tile arrangements generally were of a satisfactory character and reflected great credit upon Sir J. G. Swa.nson, hon. seeretaiy, who was also a leading competitor." During the tournament tea and refreshments were dispensed by the ladies, under tne supervision of Sirs .Burgess and Airs J. D. C. Crewe. A feature of the meeting was the remarkable success (four wins) of Miss Williams, a visiting. Siydney player.
