Prior and Newton, who escaped from gaol on Sunday evening, were recapturned by Constables O'Grady and Ryan on the wharf at 2 o’clock this morning. Prior and Newton, who were serving senton-c&s, ono of six years and the other of two and a half, for burglary at Mr H. IV. Lloyd’s jewellery shop in Greymouth, were to-day committed for trial at the Supreme Court criminal sessions at Christchurch in February on. a charge oi‘ prison-breaking. • Maging a statement, Newton said they had no friends to help them. They had had no tucker till iato last night, when they picked up a bag containing a quantity of food. They had had enough of it, and had made uj> their minds to give in tho first time they were challenged. There are prospects, of a lengthy and interesting campaign for the Christchurch Mayoralty. In addition to Mr T. E. Taylor, AX*P., Mr C. Allison, the present Mayor, and Dr Henry Thacker will bo candidates. It i& probable Mr G. W. Russell. M.R., will ario enter the field. Mr Taylor has been adopted as the candidate of the Labour organisation which intends to take an active part in the campaign.

PROGRESSIVE EDUCATIONISTS, AUCKLAND, December 23.

Clause 18 of the amendment to the Education Act, passed during tho recent session of Parliament, provides that on the application of a school committee the Board of Education may, with the concurrence of the Minister, mate regulations requiring the attendance at continuation or technical classes of young persons within the school district who are not otherwise receiving suitable education, or who are not specially exempted by the regulations. The first in the Dominion to take advantage of the above clause is the Devonport School Committee. At their meeting last evening it was resolved to make application to have the clause brought into operation at Devonport.

A WRESTLING MATCH. STRATFORD, December 23.

Louis Robertson, middle and lightweight champion catch-as-catch-can wrestler, mot Stoker Penny, light-weight champion of the nary, here last night in a match which proved a splendid exposition. Robertson gained the first fall, with a cradle hold, in four minutes, and the second fall, with a scissors hold, after forty minutes’ wrestling, thus winning the match.

A PECULIAR BANKRUPTCY. CHRISTCHURCH, December 23. A curious position was revealed at a meeting of .creditors in the estate of A. C. Cross, general outfitter, Lyttelton. Bankrupt stated he had been unable to meet a bill, and decided to tile, in order to give all the creditors an equal chance. He assessed his debts to unsecured creditors at .1115 and his assets at .1125. The Official Assignee said Cross did not know the true position. The stock alone was worth over .1200, and the book debts .£l7O, and the estate would pay two or three pounds in the pound. , KILLED IN FREEZING WORKS. ASHBURTON, December 23. A married man named Walter Jones, while working at the Fairfield Freezing Works this morning, accidentally fell down a shoot, and sustained injuries so serious that he died shortly after removal to the hospital.
