DAIRY COiII'ANIES CO-OPERATING

The Eltham Co-operative Dairy Company lias decided, so it is reported, to comoia© with. the Mangatoki Dairy Company in the recently arranged scheme of the latter concern to lease the factory of the Eltham Bacbn Company for two years, in order to prosecute the business of exporting pork. This is good news. The Mangatoki people have a guarantee for two years of a price which Will mean a very good* return to producers. All that is now required is the loyalty of farmers to the scheme. According to recent advices from, Dondon, Waitara porkers, about lOOlbs weight, were selling in London at from 6d to 61d a pound. According to the London “Times' 1 of October 31sfc, “the pig trad© has been buoyant and is still brisk, but farmers have not* confidence enough ,in the stability of any market to substitute hastily, even if it were practicable,. one class of stock for another/* In the meantime, the most prosperous industry of the small farmer of England is the production of milk for city consumption, a trade which is steadily expanding. From this it will be seen that there is every reason to believe the Home market Will be a profitable avenue ■ for the disposal of pork for homo j:imo* to come, and producers

in this country would do well to take advantage of their opportunity. Another consignment of Chinese pork, consisting of nearly 10,000 pigs, have arrived at Liverpool (says the Smithfield correspondent, of tho “Pnstoralists’ Review"), permission to laud being refused on the ground that they did not comply with the regulations the backbones had been removed. It is said that tho Cliinieso a.ro very partial to chines and chine bones, lienee the way in which this Chinese pork comes to hand. The carcases looked for all the world like a pair of trousers hanging up. This latest shipment has gene the way of previous consignments—to the Isle of Man for conversion into bacon, for which purpose it is just suited. The moat is good.
