WHITEHAVEN DISASTER
EESTJLT OF INQUIET I EXPLOSION ACCIDENTAL AND SEALING-UP APPROVED. By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright (Received December 4, 5.3 p.m.) LONDON, December 3. Tho verdict of the jury that inquired into the disaster in tho Wellington colliery at Whitehaven on May 11th last, when 136 men and boys were entombed and lost their lives, is - announced. This is to the effect that the disaster was due to an explosion of gas and coal-dust combined, and that there was insufficient evidence to show that the explosion was due to a defective safety lamp. The jury finds that the closing of the pit (which was criticised by many people at the time) was a rightful expedient, as there was no possible means of reaching the entombed men.
