LAST SATURDAY. ; Men’s "A” Grade. The ■ Thorndon-Hutt match was a very ■uneven affair, the first three rubbers being won by Thorndon (Peacock and Bmylhe) in hollow fashion, Hawkins and Cornell scoring only 7 games altogether. Callender and Kirk somewhat retrieved the situation, as the former defeated Oliver Prouse, while Kirk, though beaten by, Putiram in two straight sets, made a 'good-stand (3—6. 5—6). In the double 'another close finish resulted, Prouse and Putnam winning 6—5, 6—5, so that Kirk ,in his first, senior match-had rather an •unusual experience to be a party' to ■6—s three : times, and not win a set.

The Wellington 1.-Victoria College fixture was.' somewhat /similar to that previously referred to, Brown and Salniond winning the first three rubbers against deghorn by 36 games to ; 9. 'deghorn, though* as in Cornell’s base, did aIT that could have been.'expected of him in liis single,' in the first set >of which Salmond had very little to spare. i .■

Smith,’as on other-occasions this season was successful in /his single when every other rubber had gone against his side. In defeating ■Eller 6—5, 6—3 ho scored best win to, date, a result which proves that’fiis form "throughout the season has been the essence of consistency. Indeed, in winning .five times in his single, .Bart (B rougham Hill) in the opening match has , , been the only player to take a set from him. Jeffrey, too, had *an-linusal experience, but it was a little more pleasant than, that of either Hawkins (one game in ionr sots) or Kirk (who lost three sets at (W») in the Thorndon-Hutfc match. For the first time' in the competition the ex-Ncwtownor won both rubbers in which he competed and incidentally his isinglo.' Curiously enough, he and Eller appeared against’College twice, as they •were (members of the Wellington second team when the two latter met a month ngo, and as a’, 'double combination they lhavo Won on four out of five Saturdays. Muritai failed against. Brougham Hill by the usual margin (two rubbers to four), and had it not been for Lewis, who won both his single and. double (partnered by Nagle), the beating would have, boon a very hollow one, as . only, 16 games 'wore scored by the suburbanites in* the remaining four rubbers, three of which (against Jones and Wright) were the easiest of good things for H. V. and J. A. B. Howe; while Laishloy was two classy for Nagle, and j he gave one of his old time exhibitions, driving beautifully.Lewie and Nagle’s win of 6—l, 6—2, against: Laishloy and Lawrence was a good one,'but the same can hardly bo said of 'the first-named player's single. Lawrence is not up to “A” Grade requirements ' apart from being out of. form, but ho managed to run the Muritai. man to three sets, the third of which the latter just won by the odd game, although an umpire’s error had previously deprived him of victory at 6 —4. ■ . ■ Men’s "B” Grade. Potono now has a mortgage on this competition by virtue, of . Brougham Hill’s nai'rbfv defeat bn Saturday. Of the individual performances in this meeting of the two unbeaten teams, that of Austin’s was probably the best, as Dart is always a hard man to heat, but the Petoneite managed it in two sets. A. G. Duncan has-been consistency itself, and his win .6 —1, 6—2 against Marriner stamps "him as one of.the most solid propositions in the competition, I verv little inferior to Sampson, and probably the equal' of Crewes. Townsend’s initial appearance for the first time had a satisfactory result, as ho defeated Andrews very easily, and assisted Dart to score in the second double. . Final of Ladies* "A” Grade. The meeting between the two unbeaten teams Thorndon and Wellington I. eventuated last Saturday, on the grass courts at Hals well street, and resulted in a 5- to 1 win for Thorndon; although every ono of the six rubbers was well contested. All four singles ran into three sots, but Miss Cock was the only Wellingtonian to take a rubber for her side- The gem of the afternoon was the meeting between those old opponents. Af r ssos Nunneloy and, Trav«rs, but tho* latter could got no further than on other occasions, the winning of one of tho throe sets. Tho singles resulted ns follows: Miss Ntmneley beat Miss Travers, 3—o. o—2, 6—2. Miss Bathazn lost to Miss Cock, 4—6, 63, 4 — 6,

Miss Simpson beat Mrs Goldie. 3—6. 6—2, 6—4. Sirs Holmes beat Miss Atmore, 4 —6, 6—o, 6—2.

GENERAL ITEMS. The inter-provincial match between Canterbury and Otago, played at Christchurch last Saturday, resulted in a very easy win for the former province, which was represented by a very strong team. Otago being handicapped by the inability of some, of its leading players to make the trip. Of 22 rubbers played Otago won only one, the fifth single between! Bundle and Hannan, the former securing the rubber at the end of the second set, although an additional set was played and curiously enough won by Harman 6—love. The men’s and ladies’ singles resulted as follows: Men’s. G. Ollivier v. E. S. Brown, 6—o, 6—l, 6—l. W. Goss v. C. J. Braithwaite, 6—l, 6-3, 6-5. L. S. Jennings v. S. N. Brown, 6—X, 6—l, 6-2. W. H. Kiver v. J. S Sinclair, 6—l, E. D. Harman v. H. W. Bundle, 3—6, 5 6, 6—o. A. Borrows v. W. Bray, 6—o, 6—l, 6W. Pearse v. J. Fi Ewon, 6—2, 6—o, 5 6. P. A. Laurie v. E. Bauchop, 6—l, 6- 6—l, Ladies’. Miss Goodman v. Miss Marks, o—6, 6—l. 6—l. Mrs Berry v. Miss Bauchop. 6—3, 6 —3. Mrs Ballautyne v. Mias Davies, 6—3, 6-3. ' '■ ■ •' .■ Miss Miles v. Miss Laing, 6—l, 6—t. (The first single produced rather a remarkable result, inasmuch as the ultimate winner failed to score a game in the first set won by tho Otago lady.) Leading teams in tho seven separate competitions: - Men’s. "A" Grade: Thorndon. "B” Grade: Potono. “C” Grade: Brougham Hill X. "D" Grade; Johnsonvillo. . Ladies’. “A” Grade: Thorndon (champions). “H’ Grade: Petonc. "C” Grade: Khandallah. A wedding of interest to tennis players took place at St. Andrew’s Church on Tuesday afternoon, when Mr J. TV Watkins and Miss Murray, two well-known members of the Brougham Hill Club, were the contracting parties; ■; The writer joins with their many friends in wishing them success in their future welfare.

B. E. Kirk’ as substitute for Ward, who was unable to play owing! to an injury, , made a promising first appearance in tho senior competition for Hutt last Saturday. He made a good stand against Putnam (Thorndon) in the single, and with Callender was just beaten bv O. Pronso and Putnam by one game m each sot (6 —5, 6—5). The Wellington Provincial handicap tournament is to bo held on the Days Bay courts on Monday and Tuesday, December 26th and 27th, and if unfinished in tho two days will bo continued on Saturday, December 31st. There are the usual five events, with two added for members of the Public Schools Association, one for girls and one for boys. Ebtries for all events close with the lion, secretary (Mr D.' M.. Kean),* at 31, Hunter street, on Monday,- December 19th, at 5 p.m.

, The meeting between the two unbeaten teams in the men’s "B" Grade provided an extremely close finish, Petone defeating Brougham Hill by seven sets to .6 (rubbers even) 52 games to 53. The only rubber which ran to three sets was the first single; in which Parkinson took the first set from Sampson (who lost only 3 games in the remaining two sets), thereby accounting , for „ the suburbanites*'.'narrow victory.- ■ 7 V ; 1"

Tho Mastcrton Club's Tournament has always been an enjoyable and successful gathering, and a big contingent of Wellington players invariably makes the journey. Added .interest is lent to-the forthcoming mooting by the fact of the Wellington provincial championship having been delegated to the Masterton Club and from, the tennis point of view, this season’s tournament at Masterton will bo seconded'in importance only to the big mooting (N.Z. championships), at Blenhciui.
