THE BALLOTING TO DATE
That ominous calm that presages the fierceness of the storm is clearly obvious among tho eighteen leaders. They are not disclosing their . hands—not much. To-day, to-morrow, and the next two weeks will find them votegetting, with but little voting, and all tho white playing a -quiet game until the final day. It is hard to got votes; harder than in tho first contest, and with so many strong and popular leaders as against four in the previous competition, the vote is so divided and, split up that ono must bo brave to venture an opinion as to the final result. In the March contest everybody iu New Zealand knew the result lay between only five leaders,, but you can’t say it this time. There if no longer a fight for first place, the candidates being quite content to stay in tho running, conceal their hoardings, and mark time until December 17th. Mr Woodger leads the city this morning by a small plurality,' while Mrs Fairs leads the country for the first time with the small margin of five votes. Mr AVoodger’s increase since the last declaration is- 20,000,i ond ho gains five positions; Miss Foley, 17,000, one position; Mrs Fairs, 13,000, two positions; Mr Parris, 13,000, .'..jo position; Miss Laiug, 12,000, ono.’position; and Miss Hampson, 4000, and one position.
