FEILDING RACES

MENDIP WINS THE MANCHESTER HANDICAP. SPECIAL TO THE " TISHiS.” FEILDING, December 1. Although somewhat unpleasantly warm tho day was beautifully fine for the conclusion of the Peilding Jockey Club’s spring meeting, and again there was a capital gathering of sporting enthusiasts bent on witnessing what promised to bo some fntorosting racing. This hardly proved the case, few of the finishes being very exciting. Backers must have had ; rather a bad day, many well fancied ones being beaten. Mr Cameron’s starting was much better than on the opening day, 4 while judge Hartgill was as safe as ever in the box. The management of secretary Goodbehero left nothing to be desired, everything passing oft without an untoward incident of any kind. During tho day the smm of £BO2O wont through the totalisator, making a total of £17.139 for the meeting, a decrease of £4 on the meeting last year. Nineteen bookmakers paid fees amounting to £299 10s, the revenue from this source for the fixture being £6O 10s. Results:— YORK STAKES, Of 150 sovs; six furlongs. , 3—R. Time, Imin *29'4-ssec.. ■ : ; ■* • . . •. NOTES:BY. "THE. JUDGE/' Racing was resumed;;with.the -York Stake*!, and. on'first .day’s, form l Frill/- Ratoj should have * been ' favourite, but. instead' .punters fairlv rushed to get on the apparently over-rated-Equitas. As .usual, with some unruly customers to deal with, there was something of a’mix-up at the post, the ultimate despatch' being a*», bad one. Full Rate got another flying start, 1 but Emblem T was badly left. > Full -Rat© led from Tenterhook into' the straight, where the latter got badly bumped by Equitaa, losing her position. Coming :homo ;in. good style* Pull Rate won comfdrtably by. over a. length from the favourite, i who. was twice as • far ahead of Tanekahfu - . Tenterhook was fourth, then came Gold Battery, Lady Meuschikoff, and Mulga- Bill. Emblem i-hurt - her . 1 stifle, and was pulled up after going a furlong. Only five carried silk in the Nikau Hack Handicap, and of these Vibration, who had the services of; Oliver, was a trifle the better favourite: than Merrie, Frank. As the betting indicated, the race was a duel between the pair,-* but Vibration, who led from the start, bad no difficulty la holding 'T Mr Smart’s gelding in the straight, winning by two lengths, with Ngatiruanui three lengths further back. ; Singer- was fourth and Julian last; this being the exact order in which they were backed. For the big event, the Manchester Handicap, Sandstream, for not very obvious reasons, was made • a very hot favourite, but he failed to get placed. The eleven runners wore sent off on fairlv even terms, Koran and Countermine piloting the field past the stand. At the half-mile post the leaders were Koran, Countermine, Strathmoira and Sandstream, but rounding the bend'Mendip improved his position. Getting a passage on the rails he stalled off a strong challenge from John on the outside, a length. Teotane was a length off third, followed b-~ Sandstream, Ohlando. Countermine, Sir. Solo and Clemora. The winner was well handled by Gray who was a bit luckv to get a clear run on the inside. John finished well, but would have preferred a longer distance. ; Despite a big riso in weight. The Native was instantly dropped on as a good thing for the Cheltenham Hurdles. ; being sent out an odde-ou favourite. As usual, Watkaraka rushed away in front, loading by half-aniozen lengths for over a mile. At the last jump but one he struck heavily and unseated Young. This left The Native in front, aud he won. hut had some trouble m boating Hydrant by threequarters of a length. Rose grove wjw -third, just a head off the riderless WajKaraka. Waterworks ran very badly, bedng in the rear the whole way. Another small field of five contested the

Rongotoa Hack Hurdles. Himitangi being races fancied. Moonha-11, who was almost friendless, set elf at a great pace, but after going seven furlongs he was done with, Canadian and Merrxe Lawn taking charge. The latter had the race won a long way from homo, boating Canadian by three lengths, with Claremont two lengths back. Himitangi should have been much closer had his rider ridden him. Moonhall was a, bad last. There was an excellent start in the Welter Hack Fiat, Eva showing the way past the stand, with Master Laddo next. v» lien the back stretch was reached Floater was in the van with Eva next, but before they reached the straight Patrobus had command, and although Mallet made a great effort to get up, Mr • Plumtrec’o horse won by noarly a length, with True Knight that far off third. Then oamo Midlan, Howler, Master Laddo, and Notorious. Fourteen turned out for the Maiden Scurry, punters considering Allurement, from "Mr High-den's’' stable, as likely to score. She began too slowly to have a chance, San Pluie niching away in the lead from Melologue and The Rover. At the distance, Ryan brought Jackpin with a run on the outside, and finicking in style, Mr Dunlop's gelding won by a length, with The Rover a length off third. After them came Tetikura, Allurement, and Egotist. The meeting was brought to a close with the Railway Welter, Sharpshooter being the moot fancied of the dozen runners, but nearly everything was well backed. The favourite got badly away, and was never dangerous. Kilostcri set sail very .smartb r ,‘ with" Marton next; but after two furlongs tho latter was in front. ■ It-was ■a fine race up tho straight, Indy Menschikou beating Bunkum by a neck, with Mar ton a head away. Miss Advance and Kdlosteri close up... It was perhaps the moat exciting finish of the meeting.
