WELLINGTON RACING CLUB'S MEETING

The spring meeting of the Wellington Racing Club, will be brought to a ■conclusion to-<lay at Trentham. All the week the weather lias been dull, threatening and boisterous, and it .seems almost 100 much to hope for that there way be a change to sunshine. Certainly, Mr Hates does not hold out any promise of anything so desirable happening. Should it do so there is certain to be a larger gathering at Trentham than was the case on the opening day, for, in addition to the Champion Plate, the handicaps look like giving rise to some excellent sport. Trains will leave Te Aro at 10.34 and 11 a.m.. and Lambton at 10.51, 11, 11.10 a.m., and 1.5 p.m. The first event, the Tararua Handicap, will start at 12.10 p.m. Dearest, having only been raised 71b for her easy win on Wednesday, is fairly certain to start favourite, but with Tootane, Pirst Battery, Torpoint and ICilostere also engaged, the raco should prove interesting. Backers will not be long making up their minds in tho Juvenile Handicap, and it should bo a case of "any price bar one.” Still, the best of good tlungs is occasionally beaten, and it is just possible this may happen here.

The Spring Trial looks open enough, and not a little luck will be required to find the winner. There are fourteen en-ga-ed, and several of these have likely prospects. It is tho sort of event that tho hardened backer marks "too open' and looks on at. Merrio Frank and Ebonite will doubtless be the public fancies, but whether they can win or not is quite another matter.

There have been a good many malcontents in the Pearce Handicap, only ninej holding their places, and of these on form' three or four can be written ' ont. Iranui finished well in the Wellington Handicap, and will have plenty of support. Wimmera ent the pace out in great style in that ra,oe for over a mile, and to-dav the race is but eight furlongs. Mr Watts' gelding will have but 41b more to carry, and it will be no surprise to see him start favourite. Sir Tristram llikcs softer going, but Merrrvonia is rapidly improving. Llamvcm won the ibig event at Otakbin rather hollow style, land with 7st. 51b should bo right in it. A good finish should bo seen. One of the most attractive races of the Iday should be the Hacfk and Hunters I Steeplechase, in which Mr appears to havo brought tho field well toigether, and anything may win. Then comes tho star event, the Chamipion Plate, in which seven are engaged. !Sir Frisco, The Lark, Polymorphous and I Lady Medallist will represent the older division against Danube, Lord Kelvin and Birkdaie; representing the , threei year-olds. The Lark seems quite out lof place, judging from his form this seaISon. and Sir Frisco appears to have ,gcne off. Lord Kelvin and Birkdaie can have but little chance agamet Danube, I but the battle between Polymorphous, Lady Medallist and the Martian colt .should be a great one. Oliver will have I the mount oh Polymorphous, Jenkins, will •ride Lady Medallist, and Gray will pilot .'Danube. , '

There are eleven moderates , in the Huahine Handicap, and the winner appear* to be well concealed, although Directoire, Turna and Grand Jewel aro likely to carry most money. The curtain will be rung down with the Nai Nai Handicap, in .which we are promised a sight of that good horse, Provocation. He will bo opposed by Borne speedy sprinters in Gipsy Belle, Theodore, HcVingatahi and Penza, .but of course none of these aro really m his class, and wjietber the difference in weight will bring them together remains Ito be seen. Altogether tins programme Ilook3 Ufc" providing some good racing.
