TE ARO RAILWAY LINE

■' GOODS DEPOT WANTED. A suggestion by 'Mr J. P- Lube that; a goods station, should be provided at Te Aro has been replied to hi the negative. The Minister of Hallways states that the department has no land available at To Aro on which a goods-shed could be erected, and the -whole of the existing yard accommodation is required’for -the purpose of shunting passenger trains run to and flora that station. The conversion. -of what is purely a Passenger station into one dealing with all classes of traffic would necessitate the department acquiring city land at a proliibitive cost, which the circumstances do not warrant, For years past there have been persistent complaints to tih© running of trams between. Wellington ‘and Te Aro, and, as a consequence, the department'has reduced the passenger service as- much as possible, having regard to the convenience of the majority of the passengers who patronise the trains. • , . . The establishment of a goods depo„ at Te Aro, continues the Minister, besides being .a most expensive matter, would practically convert Jervois quay into a railway line that would lie constantly in use by shunting-engines and goodstrainfs if the goods business assumed anv dimensions. The working of the Harbour Board's sheds along the waterfront would b© considerably interfered with, and strong opposition to the frequent running of trains would therefore eventuate. Apart, however, from this aspect of the question, the cost of establishing a goods depot at Tc Aro would be so great as to make it impossible to carry the suggestion into effect. The milk-traffic lias for years past been dealt with at the station, and reasonable accommodation has been provided for the purpose.
