SUN-SPOTS AND THE WEATHRE
FEDERAL METEOROLOGIST IS OPTIMISTIC. By Telegraph—Frees Association--Copyright MELBOURNE, August 17. Mr Hunt, Federal Meteorologist, referring to the sun-apot theory regarding weather forecasting, declared that Australia would have periods of drought, but that there was absolutely no justification, by past experience of cycles, for taking a pessimistic view of the immediate or the distant future.
The theory that meteorological conditions are affected, if not governed, by the appearance of sun-spots, has been followed up by scientists for years. So many exceptions have been found to the supposed rule, however, that the general consensus of opinion now is that there is hothing in the theory. Mr Clement Wragge is one who pins his faith to the sun-spot theory, and he has lately prophesied that Australia is on the verge of a cycle of dry seasons, continuing probably until 1916.
