NOTES FROM PALMEKSTON. PEOM OUB. OWN CO3BESPONDENT. PALMERSTON, May 30. A man named J. Walworth met with a painful accident here to-day. A large pice© of rock fell on his hand, crushing it badly. He is now in the hospital. Mr A. P. Simms, Government Pomologist, who has been transferred to Southland, was presented by Terrace End residents on Saturday night with a cigarette holder. The presentation was made by the Mayor. There were two minor accidents m football matches on Saturday. . F. Wilson, a Linton player, bad his shoulder partially dislocated, and Boy Bennett, a schoolboy, son •of Mr A. E. Bennett", had his collarbone badly sprained by afall. in a school match at Feilding. • A suggestion was made at the meeting of the Holiday Association this morning that the business men of Palmerston should co-operate with the Beautifying Association and the Borough Council in giving prominence to Arbor Day. It is proposed to close business premises on Arbor Day. Complimentary references were made to the work of the Beautifying Association and the council in the endeavour, to improve the the, town.

Interest in Supreme Court business is relaxed at . present, tlrd cases against Joseph Powelka being adjourned, pending the retrial of Archibald Muir, -u-ho occupies the dock for the third time to answer the charge of stealing 37 cheques, the' property of the National Mortgage and Agency Company. Great care was exercised in selecting ths jury, the Crown prosecutor asking fiftten jurymen to "stand aside," and. Mr H. E. Cooper, for accused, exercising his challenge right to its fullest extent. It is anticipated the sittings will occupy nearly a month. Already his Honor has given orders for a third jury panel, and it is expected a fourth will be necessary. There are six civil cases needing the juryman's aid, besides the remainder of the criminal business. Messrs C. P. Skerrett and Myers have been retained for the civil action in which the National Mortgage and Agency Company seeks to compel Axel. Fredk. Anderson to return the money value of the cheques he cashed for ."Kerson," the mysterious person who was supposed to have supplied fat to the Longburn Freezing Works, and whom the Crown prosecutor is at present trying to convince the third jury is identical with the accused Archibald Muir. Mr Myers also appears in the case Duncan v. Glen Oroua Dairy Company,, .a .claim for damages for wrongful dismissal. Both cases are set dowji for 6ome time after June 6th.
