THE LEADER PICTURE
TWO TIER BROTHERS IN COERT. CHARGED WITH BREAKING AND ENTERING. Additional charges were preferred in tho Magistrate’s Conrt cn Saturday morning before Mr W. G. Riddell, S.M., arising out of tho theft from tho Wellington Art Gallery and recovery of W. B, Loader’s paihting “Southward from Kerry's Pleasant Hills.” Francis Edwin Tier, who was charged on Friday with having stolen tho picture on tho last occasion, had that accusation against him withdrawn and a charge substituted that he did, on or about April 11th, 1903, at Wellington, break and enter tho New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts and steal the Leader picture valued at .£SOO. Tho same accused was then jointly charged with his brother, Michael Tier (arrested on Friday), of having, between March 37th and 30th last, broken and entered the Academy of Fine Arts and stolen the Leader picture. Chief-Detoctive Broborg applied for a remand until Wednesday nest. Mr P. Jackson, who appeared for the accused, said he understood that Francis Tier had been allowed bail of .£IOO previously. He did not know whether the 1 police required further bail on the second charge. Detective Broberg: I should say so. The charge yesterday was one of theft, now two chargee of breaking and entering have been preferred. Mr Jackson: I think your Worship fixed the bail on what tho Chief Detective said that tho charge would be altered to one of breaking and entering. His Worship: ’There are two offences, one in 1908 and one in 1910. Mr Jackson: Concerning the same property. Would not one bail do? His Worshio: lam prepared to fix bail so that it will cover both charges, hut the bail must bo more substantia} than at present. Tho remand was granted and bail fixed at the sum of .£l5O in the case of each defendant, with one approved surety of .£l5O each or two sureties of .£75 each.
