THE ROSE.

By Gcorgo C. Whitney.

In this one spot along the starry way

Of immemorial time we meet; Tho glamour of tho long, unbroken da7 Is over us, and life is sweet.

Thin fires of morning creep above the hills While yet the waking world is cold— A prelude to the wider llamc that tills Tho sunset skies with sudden gold.

Tarry awhile; be glad ere you depart; The full abundant earth is ours; Day turns to dark while yet tho happy heart Sleeps in a mist of summer flowers.

Stay but a space and catch tho magic mood— Liston, a bird disturbs the calm, Like Pan in some strange, merry interlude Breaking upon a forest psalm.

Now, when another day, spirit unbound. Takes wing, returning nevermore, Wo hear a billow with a deep, vague sound, Moaning along a lonely shore.

A summer night—lit circle of tho land; A waltz dissolving like a dream , Into tho gradual silence where wo stand— Strains that more soft than silence seem.

There is a beauty and a breadth of life, A whisper of eternal things, Some truth, much love, a little rest from Strife, With magic that the round year brings.

I hear warm Summer’s laughter in the rain. Where Misty skirts of Autumn cling, And in his kingdom Winter leaves again Tho brilliance of ,tho crowded Spring.

Earth is no lonely track or vale of tears. But greener and more gracious grows. And blooms and fades ana bourgeons with the years. Showering beauty as it blows. / - ■
