An explosion in a 00111017 at Palos, a small town near Birmingham, in the mining region of Jefferson County, Alabama, entombed a large' number of men.

The first intimation of disaster was tho sudden leap of a sheet of flame from the mouth of the with a tremendous report. A clerk standing a hundred yards away was killed iusantly. It is believed that 185 lives haro been lost.

So far only three bodies have been recovered, and rescue work has had to be abandoned temporarily owing to the presence of the deadly black damp in the workings.
