ATTEMPTED FLIGHT

AVIATOR'S BID FOE "DAILY MAIL" PRIZE.

An attempt was made yesterday by Mr White to- fly from London to Manohest-er (164 miles), for tho "Daily Mail" £IO,OOO prize. Tho flight had to bo made in twenty-four " hours, allowaneo being niado for two stops—one at Rugby and one at Crewe. M. Farman had assisted White to tune up a new type of Farman biplane with a monoplane tail. White started at ten minutes past 10 o'clock a.m. in lino weather, and ivas out of sight in four minutes. Motor cars were hopelessly outpaced, the aeroplane motor working admirably.

"White was flying sometimea at an altitude of 1000 ft, and occasionally attiaiiuied a speed of 60 milos sua houi'. He overhauled several trains and descended at a selected place at Rugby nt 7.25, having eincled awund easily before descending. Lord and Lady Denbigh and others welcomed the aviatori who complained of tho high wind and bitter cold. Tho ladies gave ihim a fur oioak and! mufiis.

Hajving breakfasted, Whlite restart.* ed at 8.25, and landed 'between Tarnworth and Lichfield .at 9.30 exhausted by tile intense cold and high! winds.
