THE ASSOCIATION GAME

THE PLAY ON SATURDAY. FIRST DIVISION RESULTS. Swifts 1 Hovers I) Thistle 2 Ramblers 1 The blustering southerly of Saturday afternoon did not conduce to good exhibitions ci' the round bsill game, though the senior fixtuiei, at least, were all well fought out. Pine shooting was, of course, quite out of the question on the. more exposed grounds. The first division panics resulted us follow; SWIFIS v. ROVERS. Playing up on Kelburne Park, where the southerly swept unobstructed across the field, Swifts defeated Rovers by one goal to nil after a. fairly hard gamo. The difference in the figures would have been greater had the victors been able to shoot a little straighter. They had the wind behind them in the first half, [and a" brisk attack kept Hovers' goalkeeper, Ponlmgton, very busy. He was | able to block many otherwise certain scores. The only score of the gamo- was secured after about fifteen minutes'play, Versey heading between Hovers' posrs nicely. Though Rovers had tire aid of the wind in the second half they .were unable to penjutrate thleir ■ opponents' defence. More than once, however, shots nearly got the goal bar unfortunately being somewhat in the way. Sparrow was one of the men who found this out to his cost, the ball striking the bar on several occasions. Rovers made some good and brisk attempts to score towards the end of the game, but without success. Mr Yeoman was in oharge. DIAMONDS v. x.M.C.A. Diamonds and Y.M.C.A. met on Newtown Park, where the ground was in good condition All attempts at long shoots were absolutely nullified by the high wind. The first spell was not productive of any score, and right until • the closing moments of the game it seemed as if the position would remain unchanged. Some time after the commencement Diamonds made a strong attack on the young men's position. A. Lowe sent up a iine shot, but the everready Hollis was on his guard and the leather was .smartly returned to midfield. Y.M.C.A. followed up with a determined assault and returned the attack. Timperley booted in the ball, but the bracks'' goalkeeper, Marshall, effectively saved the position. Just prior to half-time Diamonds charged their opponents' lines in fine style; however, as. ill-luck would have it, a vicious puff of wind diverted the ball and no score resulted. Onco again the blacks assailed the Y.M.C.A. stronghold, but a fine shot from the right wing ended in the ball striking the post. Upon resumption after the interval Diamonds as-: sumed the aggressive, but the young r?en's .position remained impnegnatole. At one time a melee in front of Y.M.C.A.'s goalposts seemed as if it would end in favour of Diamonds, but a timely kick on the part of a Y.M.C.A. man savied the colours. Towards the middle of the spell Diamonds took charge, and Black, receiving a pass from D. Roberts, sent in a kick from the corner which Hollis failed to intercept. Prom the kick-off Y r .M.O.A. stormed the blacks' quarters, but ■ the latter, got possession of the ball arid made off "with it to the young men's end. Y.M.C.A. were penalised for an infringement of tiie rules, and Diamonds, per Tonga, had a shot at goal. Hollis banged the ball out, but. Tonge smartly followed up and shot l the ball through. This reverse made Y.M.C.A. all the more resolute;, and out of a scrimmage whicli eventuated in front of the blacks' goal, Schofield obtained the ball and banged it through. No further scores were registered, the gamo ending thus: Diamonds 2, Y.M.C.A. 1. Mr Paton was referee. THISTLE v. RAMBLERS. Thistle encountered and defeated Ramblers at Duppa' street. The match was not productive of any startling incidents, the high wind nullifying all attempts at soientific play. Thistle had the ' better of the game all through, and for the most part their superiority was overwhelming. It was only the impossibility of shooting accurately that prevented them _ from scoring a much more decisive victory. So very strong was the wind that it was a common occurrence for the ball, on being kicked high into the air, to be .carried completely off. the field, and a great portion of the match was occupied in bringing the ball back into play. Ramblersscored their only goal in the first spell when playing against the wind. Hart, the centre-half, being the responsible medium.- Thistle obtained two goals, scored by Fletcher and Irvine, and had hard luck in missing another-just before the game terminated. Mr J. Davidson was the referee. SECOND DIVISION. The match between Y.M.C.A. and Botone ended in a win for .tne former team by two goals to nil. .
