ANGLICAN ACTIVITY

NEW CHURCH FOE UPPER HUTT. The foundation, stone of the Anglican Church,’ ■whose erection was recently commenced in Upper Hutt township, was .laid 3*esterday by Bishop Wallis, in the. presence of a large gathering of parishioners. His Lordship congratulated those who had laboured so long and so arduously on the splendid result of their efforts. Half the estimated eosb 'of the building had been raised and. thanks to the generosity of Mr Davis (who gave the site.), the whole of this sum could be devoted toward that purpose. The bishop referred to the fact that the Trontham rifle range’and racecourse—resorts of men from all parts of the Island—wero within a stone's throw of tho township, and asked the parishioners to remember that the usefulness of a church was not intended to be restricted to those intimately connected with ? t but thatlthey should! be.* at pai>isittolmpik»o those .resorting to or employed at these and similar places feel that there was a welcome for them ’boo. The vicar, the Kev, Mr Sykes, also addressed the gathering, and warmly thanked those—particularly the members of tho ladies' committee—whose efforts were responsible for that day's function. It is intended to still continue to hold services at the old church at Trmtham.
