JOHNSONVILLE WANTS LIGHT

■ TWO PROPOSITIONS DEPUTATION' TO MAYOR OP WELLINGTON. A deputation from the Johneonvilh Town District, consisting of Messrs J. Rod, F. T. JMoore and R. Boukl, waited upon the Mayor of Wellington (Dr Newman) yesterday morning requesting the- Oity Council to extend its electric lighting mains to Joknsonville. Councillor J. P. Luke, M.P., introduced the deputation, which placed two suggestions before tho Mayor. The first proposal wa<: to the effeob that the City Council should carry out the reticulation, and provide for forty street lamps and private lighting connections, within a radius of 40 drains of the Johnsonville Post Office. If this were done tho board would agree to pay 5 per cent, per annum on the capital outlay on tho work and 7d per unit for current—tho town price—the board to have'the right to acquire tho installation at any time on the payment of the capital cost. Tho alternative was that the Council should instal the system aft laid down in the first suggestion. th# board guaranteeing that tho currcng sold would return the council 2,j pat cent, on the capital expended on th» installation. The ■ estimated cost of tho works was sfcited to bo £I2OO, and of that amount £4OO or £SOO would he needed for enlarging the present mains which wont to the boundary of tho district. Tho Mavor suggested that the ilohnsonvillc Town District- should carry out tho reticulation, the city supplying tho current in bulk at tho boundary. In answer to this it was pointed out by the deputation that Johnsonrille's financial lamit was very small and a loan would have to bo resorted to for the purpose of raising the necessary money. This might be defeated, and even if it wore carried there would be. considerable delay. On. tho other hand tho Wellington G-as Company was prepared to treat with tho district for lighting tho town; and proposals had ■been received from a syndicate in regard to tho installation of acetylene gas. After a good deal of technical discussion the Mayor asked the deputation to submit the proposals in writing. These would be considered by the finance committee to-morrow and como before- the full council for discussion.
