FRTJTT AND PRODUCE. WELLINGTON MAEKETS. The healthier tone which prevailed in the local fruit markets towards the close of last week was in evidence when the ■maxieta opened this week; in fact, it may

be taken) for granted that the two lines of local fruit which are now most in evidence, viz., apples and pears, will maintain far better prices than those, which have ruled for some three or four wotks past. Some excellent wimples oi these two varieties of fruit are coming to this market. It j.s strikingly evident the greater care awl attention watch the majority of glowers are now bestoivwg on their fruit, in comparison with iormer years, and with correct ganging as to the condition in ■which to ship to the llc/mu and Continental markets, there should ijot be any trouble in mullets in that quarter being found by iocal producers to be as reuruimutive to them as to Australian and Tasmaniau exporters. Somo small supplies oi plums come filtering oil to the market, but as the seaton is so far advanced, this fruit is not receiving much attention. There is likely to bo a scarcity of imported grapes this v.eek, as Lho heavy iams experienced in South Australia have presented shipping. The inquiry lor locally giov.n „.i'.pcs is particularly good, and e-iwioebc uothouso are soiling at satisfactory prices. Lemons are inclined to scarcity, and the market is stronger. Peaches are still arriving in excessive quantities, and growers are looking forward to an early change in the market, which has been at an unsatisfactory level for some weeks. Translupinelits of Cook Xsiai.d oranges arrived via Auckland The condition was, taking it all round, .good, but a fair percentage of the oranges were green. Any choice sound fruit is in good demand. Apples, choice, coloured dessert, 7s to 8s case; prime, 6s to Gs yd; pears, choice dessert, 7s Gd to 3s case; prims, 6s to 7s; stewing, 8s Cd to Is tsd; grapes, ch( ice hothouse, la to la 3d lb; prime, Sd to 10d; ; plums, 3s to 3s 3d half case; r.av sions, 3s to 3s 6d box; lemons (local), Gs to 7b Gd case; capo gooseberries, Gd to 7d lb; tomatoes, choice, 2s (id. to Us Gd; prime- ,1s to 2s; peaches, choice, 2s to 3s 9d half case; prime, 2s to 2s 6d. POTATOES ANT) ONIONS. Thero is not any change to report in the potato market. Supplies from areas in the Wellington, province are now becoming exhausted, and reliance !s being placed on southern stocks. Some very nice samples of tubers from Otago are coming to hand, but in the majority of cases there are symptoms of blight. The onion market, peculiar to relate, has again weakened, and tliifl on bop of prices which were at a ridiculously low level. Potatoes, prime selected, £6 10s to J 27 ton; prime ordinary, .£5 10s to £6; in-ferior-,£2 to £3 ton; onions, prime, .63 10s to M 10s ton; inferior, M 3 to £3 ss. OTHER VEGETABLES. An excellent demand is being met with for all lines, but as several descriptions are in over supply, values are not at all inclined to high levels.
