A young man named Frank TJronnan was before Mr A. 1). Thomson, S.M., at the local Cnnrfc thismorning on a charge of attempted suioido last week at one of tho flsixmills near Shannon. It apuears that no ono saw him actually attempt his life, but ho •was making free' with a gun and informed his mates that ho had attempted to take hi-, life, and exhibited a wound on his forehead, which ho said was caused by a bullet. In reply to his Worship this morning, Bronnan admitted having made tho attempt, and Raid lie was despondent at the- time. His Worship, after lecturing the young fellow, said ho would not send him to ciiol, and convicted and discharged him. Mr E. J. Armstrong has reported to tho Oroua Drainage Board that ho interviewed Mr Poynton. superintendent of tho State Guaranteed Advances Board, with referenco to tho position occupied in the matter of a loan of £4OO provisionally granted to tho hoard under the old Act, aid for which all tho statutory procedure required had been taken. Mr Poynton had stated that under the ruling of tho Auditor-Goneral and SolicitorGeneral it had been hold that tho passing of tho Act had repealed all grants, provisional or otherwise, made or payable under tho old Act to public bodies immediately on tho coming into operation of the Qua ranted Advances Act, even in respect of loans where tho total amount granted had not been lifted at that date.
