RAILWAY DEPARTMENT
ANNUAL PICNIC AND SPOUTS. . The first annual picnic and sports of •the officers of the Railway Head r.nd Departmental Offices was held at Day's Bay yesterday. The wet weather did! much to spoil what woujd undoubtedly have "been a most successful gathering. .There was a largo attendance of officers, but the women and children were a. niinor quantity.. Those in charge of .the outing did their best under the ooniditions, and an interesting programme of sports was gone through. About 150 eat down to dinner in the pavilion; amongst those present being Messrs llonaync (general manager,), Whitcombo (traffic manager), Baxter '(stores manager), and Wynne (signal land electrical engineer). A number of gentlemen, including the Hon. J. A. iSlillar, Minister of Railways, who had (Signified their intention to bo present, were unable to attend. The sports events resulted as follow:75yds Swimming Handicap.—Baxter 1, Jcnkinson 2, McLean 3.

I A number of events had to bo postponed, and may be decided at some future date.' Credit is duo to the hon. secretary (Mr H. McKeowen), and those who worked with him in carrying out the undertaking in a satisfactory manner under most unfavourable weatjier .conditions.
