GREAT VOTING CONTEST

THE "N.Z. TISVSES"

GENERAL ARMISTICE AMONG THE CANDIDATES

OPPOSING FORCES GATHERING FOR THE GREAT CONFLICT

WITH FRIENDLY GREETINGS, BUT IN HOSTILE ARRAY, THE VETERANS AWAIT FINAL ORDERS

In silent ranks, with grounded rifles, the candidates are waiting for tho command to "Slope arms! Forward! March!" Scouting parties hare been thrown out reconnoitring in bush and gully, but no ammunition is being wasted. Tho outposts and sentries from each opposing force exchange friendly greetings, but it is only the amenities of warfare before the final command to fire. It is a general armistice, tacitly agreed upon, which could bo broken by tho firing of a single ballot, and each hardened votoran of .nany a bard-fought scrimmage is only waiting for the "enemy-" to cross the battlements and view tho outer world. Each candidate knows what it means to precipitate hostilities; every voter knows that tho true value of his ballot will be effective only on the last day. It will soon be the eve beforo the battle of the ballots, and the generalship displayed only enhances the tension and desire to strike, and strike hard on tho great and final day. The forces are gathering —it is the inovitablo quiet before the great and final outbreak, when victory will perch upon tho banners of some, and others trail in defeat, but, win or lose, it will be the " last ditch," where only the brave and honoured fall. 'Tention 1 Here is the line-up this morning:—
