At the end of last session, Parliament, upon the recommendation of a •select committee, voted £350 as a compassionate allowance to Motormau Barton, who was seriously injured in, a tram accident in Courtenay place, a steam lorry belonging to the State Goal Department coming into collision with the car driven by Barton. It was decided that there was no legal liability upon the State, and Barton, ■by lapse of time, lost bm opportunity of proceeding "against has employers for compensation. Cabinet has now decided that the compassionate aHowance shall be paid to Barton through the Pnblio Trustee. NINEPENCE CAPITATION. The Dunedin School Committees' Association interviewed the Hon., G. IVrwids asking if he would do his best to reinstate the ninepence capitation granted 'by the late Mr Seddon. Committees were finding . it impossible to carry on without this grant. The Minister, in the course of a lengthy reply said reinstatement was impossible this year, but nest year he would consider the whole question, and probably suggest a new basis of payments to committees. He suggested that as in many cases boards had reduced payments to committees each time a special grant was .made by the Government, the funds of those boards were swelled by so much that they could now well afford to make up the present loss sustained by committees.
