PRIME MINISTER .ANSWERS MB HUGHES. THE TAXATION PROBLEM. By TeleEraph—Press Association— Oopyris'SYDNEY, February 18. Speaking at Glen Innes, the Federal province,' Mr Deakin, Federal Prime Minister, controverted the recent argument by Mr W. Hughes that the main issue of the elections was a progressive land tax. Tho Commonwealth, he said, had the sole power of indirect taxation, and so long as that was sufficient for its needs it had no intention of intetf ering ' with the State prerogative of direct taxation. Only in extreme cases would the Commonwealth's power to resort to direct taxation be exercised.
