THE MARTIAN CANALS

(To the Editor *' N.Z. Time.") _ Sir, —Among the . fanciful suggestions made concerning the supposed canals on' Mars may I place another? It has been mid that by some giant scheme of arc-lights arranged in' a triangle and placed across a continent wo might attract the attention of the Martians, if there are such persons, .and they would reply-with a similar figure on their planet. Since many eminent astronomers have accepted and mapped the wonderful mathematical network of lines'known as the canals ,of Schiaparelli, it cannot be supposed that men like Professor Dowell and others would risk their scientific reputation by inventing falsehood., Now, it is said that-the canals are no longer there. Is it not possible (I do hot s"ay probable) that the advanced science of the Martians produced those mathematical figures, not as canals, hut so that we might understand or repeat them? I know' little of astronomy, and my suggestion is improbable, but as it is original it may perhaps bo worth a thought.—l am, etc., EDWARD TREGEAR. Wellington, February 14th.
