THE P. & O. LINE

We hardly know whether rejoicing about “another strand being added to the Empire” (vide Mr William Massoy,: M.P.) is quite within the bounds of . tho exultation Auckland very naturally feels at the extension, of the I’. and O- steamers’ itinerary to that port, iDha fact that the Dominion is

to he served by another important shipping line, thus affording increased menus of communication with the outside world by extending the facilities for travel, is in itself quite sufficient ground for viewing the new enterprise with satisfaction. It calls rather for gratification at the growth of the Dominion’s business rather than for Imperial felicitations. It is in every way good to see these steamers coming to Now Zealand, and our only regret is that the incident celebrated at Auckland yesterday is not accompanied by announcement of reduction in the rates of transport to London. That, indeed, would ho a signal for real joyfuluess. Nevertheless the P- and 0. Company is to bo most heartily , welcomed to New Zealand, and it is to he hoped tho directors will have cause to be satisfied with the results of their innovation. Tho citizens of- Auckland are to be congratulated upon , tho ’ proof fihay have of the importance of their city, which everyone recognises is hound to have great future development. Tho visit of tho M-alwa (Was an historic event not only to that city, but to every part of tho Dominion, giving as it docs another proof, of tho development of the country .and its attractiveness as ia field for commercial expansion.
