CANTERBURY CROPS
BEADY SALE FOB GBAfN. PRESS ASSOCIATION. CHKISTCKUBCir. February 3. ! During the week there has been a, grea* i change in the weather conditions, persiatent rain giving way , to warm sun- - shine and drying winds, the result being -, that grain in stook has dried rapidly, . and the work of gathering has been continued without • intermission since. ,‘ The condition of. the grain is reported to have improved greatly since the rain, and now it is not anticipated that the :■ damage will be’as widespread as was at i one time ieared. A considerable amount of work has yet to be done, but given another fortnight of favourable weather, not a-great amount of stuff will bo left ■■ ungathered in the northern part of the > province, - The amount of grain placed on offer during last week has been comparatively; small, but for offerings there has been a ready sale, samples in sound condition commanding good competition; and, , prices ranging from 4s. to Is.ld on 1 trucks at country, stations. These v prices arc not fixed on' English values but on local requirements, and it is fair;., 1 to assume-that they will bo maintained-, only as long as the demand: exists, Farmers have been ready sellers , but , meT- ';. chants have not shown any disposition, to operate fieoly, being dubious. as to ~ tbe condition of the grain. Oats are not coming forward in largo quantities; the samples shown during tho week have been fairly good in quality, not having been damaged by the weather to nearly the extent anticipated some time ago. Many crops - threshed have yielded unsatisfactorily, the return per acre being disappointingly low, while samxdeti have'invariably been light.
