HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. Tho Kutt County Council met yesterday. Present Messrs J. Whiteman -(chair), J. Wake-ham. W. Galloway, T. Edwards, W.’M. Welch, and M. J. Lynch.j , Th© Inspector of Works, Mr J. W. 'Cudby, reporting on the month's opera-' tions,* stated that th© Silverstream bridgOi had been re-decked. Tho pier at thol southern cud showed unmistakable signs of decay, and he had ordered the neces-i «ary timber to renew that portion, while, the pile-driving gear was in the vicinity! of tho bridge. Th© two Akatarawa bridge© now under repairs were even. wots© than, he at first thought them to, be, and the work would therefor© take 1 considerably longer, than ho had anticipated. In regard to the question. of th© Western Hutt road, fronting section .48, he .was of opinion that the road line os at present should femaiu so. If tho “widening of the road became necessary t \ a better road and at much less cost,could be constructed.

‘Messrs- F. J. Pinny, Natusch, and Hr| Pomace waited. upon, the council and urged the widening of the BcJlmont road. Tho council decided to ask the Minister of Public Works for a XI for £1 subsidy. ,

■ A deputation, Messrs Weir, Gaulter, and Marshall, asked tho council to do further river protective works at Hayward's. Tho matter was referred to Councillor Welch and tho Inspector of Works.

Regarding the obstruction in the Waiwhotu stream, the council derided to go on with the case against Mr Ellis, owner of tli© timber in the stream, to have tli© obstmrtion removed,

It was stated that Mr W. S. Short, commissioner, would sit on Friday next at the council's office in connection with the adjustment of -accounts between tho Hutt and Makara Counties.

The Treasury advised tho council of payments of grants—Plimmerton-Pahau-tanui .CICS 7& lid. 'Waimn-o-mata road XT7S, Phillip road cfilOO, Belmont road extension .filOO.

Couucillav. Wakeham was appointed as a further trustee (in addition to Councillor ’Welch) of the Taita Cemetery. The council agreed to take over Kimu, Kata, and Mntatua roads, so far as construction work was concerned. It was agreed to pay Mr .T. Farrell overtime in protecting county bridges at night from being burnt by fires lighted by pieknickers at Pakurntahi. "A special meeting of tho council is to bo held on March Bth to hear any objections in connection with the Plim-morton-Pukerua road. Application is to be made to the Kail-) way Department for 5000 yards of Pae-; kakariki metal. The K-amnati Estates Company is to bo asked to remove all fences off (taken over by the council. Th© council decided that the insurance of its employees should remain with the Ocean Accident Company. An implication from Mr F. J. Mann for a slaughterhouse at Silverstream was. granted on . the usual conditions. a ccounts amounting to *€723 12s 5d were passed for payment.
