THE STATE UPHELD. A REJOINDER TO .CARDINAL MORAN. ' By-Telegrapn—Press Association—Copyright. (Received February 9, 1.10 a.m.) SYDNEY, February 8. Dr Wright, Anglican Archbishop of Sydney, speaking at a prize distribution, and referring to the question of religious teaching in schools,. said that the State had given the right to every Christian section of the country to send its own teachers' to teach its own children. He held that they should he thankful to the State for making this arrangement and so recognising a great principle.
Speaking at a similar function on Saturday last, Cardinal Moran declared that Scripture lessons given in tho public schools wore not only irreligious, but were defective in literary merit. Non-sectarian education, added tho Cardinal, was nothing moro than a nonedscript system of irreligious belief, which might be more oi less conformable to Protestant principle! and consistent with Protestant tenets, but as viewed by Roman Catholics was a stereotyped system of infidelity and agnosticism.
