According to tlio New York “Herald/* E. Dugan, the leading American jockey, has been engaged by Mr August Belmont to ride hi® racehorses next year. Dugan, will irecoive a retainer of 12,000 dollars. Besides the contract with the chairman of the Jockey Club, Dugan has affixed his signature to papers awarding second call to Mr S. Hildreth. It is understood Mr Hildreth will pay the young jockey a- retaining foe of 5000 dollars. Dugan has a certain income of 17,000 dollars. This amount, however, does not adequately tell the money that he will earn next year. In addition to his retaining fee he will be paid 25 dollars for a winning mount, and 10 dollars for all losing mounts. This money, plus fees for outside mounts from other own- , ers, will bring his earnings for the year 1 close to the total of 30,000 dollars. The Belfast (Ireland) Corporation has decided upon a big housing scheme to cost £250.000- It includes the clearing away of inranltarv areas, the widening of streets, and the erection of model dwellings.
