CONGRATULATIONS

PRESENTATION TO MR J. H. MENTIPLAY. Members of the Wellington Bowling Club assembled in large numbers at the pavilion on Saturday evening for the purpose of making a presentation to Mr J. H. Mentiplay, the president. Mr A. Hamilton, vice-president of the club, occupied the chair. He explained that the meeting had been called to congratulate Mr Mantiplay on his recent promotion to the position of relieving manager of the Bank of New Zealand, and to wish him. future prosperity. They, however, regretted that he was leaving them after sixteen years' connection with the club. In office and out of office he had taken an active part in making the club what it now is.

Mr T. Bush, in making a presentation of a purse of pipes to the president, said his career in the club had been a very useful on«. Mr Mentiplay had always been keenly interested in the internal working of the club, and nobody had done more for it. He wished the recipient ftnd his wife every prosperity and happiness in the future. (Applause.) Captain Edwin and Messrs W. T. Grundy, W. B. Dall, T. Ballinger, and P. Grady also spoke, a suggestion being made to the directors to have steps taken to make Mr Mentiplay a life member. The toast of the president, his_ wife and family was then enthusiastically honoured.

Mr Mentiplay, who was received with applause, expressed his appreciation of the remarks made about himself,, although he could not say they were altogether correot. Still he thought he could say without egotism that no one could have been more attentive to his duties while secretary of the Northern Bowling Association, and also of the Wellington Club than he had been. (Applause.) He had done all he could in the interests of bowling. He was exceedingly sorry that the breaking-up of old associations had come, but he would oarry away with him many pleasant recollections of the hours he had spent on the Wellington green. He sincerely thanked them for their presentation and good wishes, which would never be forgotten wherever hs was. (Applause.)
