CHAMPIONSHIPS

A FARCE WHICH SHOULD BE ENDED, A .matter which should receive the attention of the next agricultural societies- conference is the farce that'is "being enacted at minor country shows of awarding championships in classes where there is no competition. Tho country show championship, it may. be argued, is estimated at its true value; but when advertising the honours of on animal it is not a usual thing to mention where the championships were obtained. This, of course, is. a matter which cannot be remedied. The little rural fairs which cater to .pedigree sheep and cattle, will continue to scatter these high honoui-s around. What should be done is to discountenance societies awarding cn.ampion6hips unless there are at least three competitors. It is obviously absurd for a breeder, perhaps a man who ould not win in decent company, taking a dozen sheeo to a show anci, because Tie is the only exhibitor, securing a string of first prizes and two chanmionships. The farce should be ended.
