The start | v.-a.s a go-c-d one, and right to- tho turn, at tho end of tho half journey, | tho wholo lot were, bunched. Here Snell broke away and v.-on easily by 12yds. A. W. Barry finished second four yards in front-"of L-. McCarthy, who beat A. Wi-ckham by 2yds for third position. Snell got over the distance in 3min 17 3-ssec, 4 2-ssec faster than tho previous New South Wales best, which, as already stated, stood to tho credit of the same swimmer. Tho bipc quartcr-milo attracted six starters, L. Macqueen being tho only absentee. Tho men who faced tho fla.!' were H. TI. Hardwick (Sydney), AV*r Longworth (Sydney), S. Wright (Manly), A- D. Hill (lViosman), 1/. D. Broim (North Sydney), and J. Conlon (Pyrmont). Mr Griffiths sent tho wholo six away as one man, and ttie-y swam neck-and-neck almost, till perhaps 20 yards from tho turn at the termination of tho first lap (llOyds). when Hardwick asserted himself, and led from S. Wright by syds, roundins into tho second stretch. JAarclwick still showed the way down to the end of tho furlong, where Ins advantage was 6vds better than Wrignt, s position-, tvith Hill, a few yards behind, third. Hero Conlon, who was lring last, left tho water, and Hill followed suit a little further on .Hardwick was never again troubled and eventually won easily by 20yds in S 39 3-5-sec from Wright who; covered tho journey in omm 57soc. Longworth was 10yds back from Wright, third; and Brown, the only other barter to finish, a few yards away bS; Longworth completed the swim in 6mjn 7 g 4-s S ec, and Brown m torn 12 ThrTOnoluding day of the carnival was favoured by better weather and the attendance of tho public reached faced the starter in the 220yds championship ol tno §Lte. L- Boarduian (Sydney) and A. D. Hill (Mosman) were absentees. _ All Kot away well together, and romaanod bunched till half a la«p had been traversed ; then Cecil Healy (East Sydney) and H. H. Hardwick (Sydney) went to the front. Healy hedd a slight advantage at the turn, but Hardwick caught him at tho push-off. Here a fine race was seen. Neck and neck tho pahr of champions "trudged" aurid great excitement to within twenty yards ol the finish, where Healy spurted and won by three yarcfe from Hardwick m 2min 29 4-ssec. Hardwick was five yards in front of Wright, having got oven- tho journey in 2min 32sec. Wright's time for the distance was 2min 41sec, while the only other starter (C. J. Hunt. Palace Emporium) was six yards further away from Wright, Hunt's timo beting 2min 4Ssec. Tho third and fourth men's swims were slower than standaird. Healy's figures were 1 2-sseo bdhind the late B. B. Kieran's Australasian and world's record of 2min 28 2-ssec, accomplish-ed on, DeceinI bor 6th, 1905.

Tho 100yds cifampdonsMp of the country attracted a good number of starters, including: C Heard, J. J. Willis, 0. Langworthy, FJ. P. Hearne, A. Harvey, and W. Finlayson (Parramatta), W. McKillop and B. B. Blackett (Goulburn), H. Field (Perseverance), G. G. Murray (Beecroft), J. White, C. Lawford, and W. Minehan (Bathuret), F. W. Samdon-, H. Giles, and E. Sloan (WoHongong), T. Smith and W. Dyet (Merewether). Following upon some fine racing, E. Sloan won the event by t3ie touch from Q. G. Murray, in lmin 6 2-ssec.

Tile 500yds team championship of Now South Wales resulted; in a. win for East Sydney after a great race between O. Healy and . L. Boardman (Sydney) over the last' relay. Boardman left the platform an appreciable time before Healy, and swam splendidly.' Healy sped along at a. great paice, and found it almost impossible to shake his plucky young adversary off. Boardman was beaten by half a yard. North Sydney finished third. East Sydney negotiated the distance in smin 10 1-oseo; Sydney in 6min 12sec, and North Sydney in smin The times of each member of the winning team were: Macqueen lmin Isec, Cohen lmin 5 4-ssec, A. Wickbam lmin _ Okec, Lavves lmin 5 l-ssec, and Cecil Healy SSsec. WATER POLO. The first round of the water polo championship was "commenced on Wednesday last, when Thorndon met Y.M. C.A. at Thorndon and Swifts met Wellington A at To Aro. The latter is considered by experienced swimmers to be the best and closest game of -dolo yet seen in Te Aro Baths. Both teams in turn attacked vigorously, but neither were able to score during the first spell. The second spell was equally interesting, and saw Wellington attacking most of the time. About half-way through" Swifts carried the ball to Wellington's goal, and after some scrambling play Jenkmson registered a try. From this out Wellington attacked strongly, and frequently had Swifts in uncomfortable positions. Some hot play took place m front of Swifts' goal, and Pa.tcr E on, to save swam with the ball through his own'goal For some reason no goal was allowed. ' Wellington came however and a foul by Kelly (Wellington) in front of Swifts' goal spoilt a certain try Swifts were delivered from an exceedingly tight corner shortly afterwards bv the call of time. For Wellington N'enl was safe as full-back, while Bridgeand Morpeth played well. Beaunionfs marking of B. C. Freyberg was clever and doubtless caused the Swifts I man considerable surprise. Kelly |

played much below bis usual form, tartly making a U'ood shot. For Swifts, C. Moore and G. PaU'iPon were lntn-t cc-n----m»'cuou» v.hilo !■'. Wilton m goal could not have been better plac-d prey berg made the most oi the lew ehaiiot-s that came his nay, but was t-jo well marked to l;e of much ai-=ditanco. Mr G. Sadd was ic-I'erea.

The Thcrndon-Y.M.C.A. game « ;-iiu:li closer than the scores iwiv.-alc, and : was only t"e splendid play oi Keg. .■.ilv that enabled Thorndon to wiu. i .Ji.G.A. attacked strongly fiom vne • tait and within three minutes oi the i aimeiic"iii»ut of the game llannu -cored. Almost immediately afterwards Itealy shot an easy goal, and eveiieu maUers. Before the spell concluded Healy shot another goal, the whistle sounding with the score Thorndon 2, V.M.C.A. 1, On the resumption of play i'.AI.C.A. attacked strongly, and Haniia just missed his shot at Tuorndon's /'.iter some fluctuating play Thorndon livened un aiut sent anotner shot home, Healy again being responsible. this on play was rather umnterea g, bi/th teams showing tho effects ol tho .-.trenuous work earlier in the game. ,iust belore the end, however, EoOerts, iiealv ana Nelson put in some good work", which resulted in the latter scorlii" the last goal of the match. Honna was the pick of the V/..U.0.A. team, tho members of which played (in exceedingly ii-ood and plucky game. Of the Thornuoti team, Healy stood out from tue rest, in speed, cunning ami accuracy cl Biioot:ng, anil was auly .seconded hy F. llpherts and it. NOlson, who played well. Mr Somerville s refeieeing gave satisfaction. WAIBAEAPA CLUB'S GALA. The annual carnival of the AVairarapa Swimming Club, held on the Park lake, Masterton, on Monday -last, was a huge success in every way. Only seven Wcilingtonians made tho trip, and of these Keg. Healy was the most successful, winning the four events in which he competed. Ir« the 220yds AVairarapa championship, and 75yds scratch race, he won without exerting himself, while the 220yds Handicap also proved an easy thing. In the 410yds Handicap, however, he caught the limit men only a few yards from home, and had to swim hard to win. ' His time was Binin 7sec—exactly Iscc better than tho Mew Zealand record. When- it is. considered that he had already 6w-um in three event 3, and played in. a water polo match, the merit of thi* performance oan be appreciated. Had he been fresh it is beyond doubt that ho would have covered the distance undei 6min, notwithstanding the fact that ho was swimming in fresh water. In train ing swims recently, he has been clocked to do the 410yds in smin 57sec, so ifc seonis highly probable that the record figures will undergo a change the first time opportunity offers. The remainder of the Wellington men were fairly successful, ar.d all speak in the highest terms of tho courtesy and hospitality extended to them by the Masterton sivimmers. Among these latter arc mmo who nromiso well, F. Phillips, J. McLaren, L. Carmi-ne, and A. Miller especially showing up prominently. Carmine's plucky finish in the 440yds Handicap was most creditable, arxl he should ere long fashion out into a first-class distance swimmer. The principal events resulted as under : —lloyds AA'airarapa Club Championship—F. PVUips. terton, 1; J. McLaren. Masterton, 2-, Time, Imin flO l-ssec. 220yd<: Wairarana Chamnionshin—Reg. VICTORIA COLLEGE OLTJB. Tho following letter from Mr G. H. Nicholls, hon. eecrotarj- of the A 7 ictoria Cbllcgo Swimming Club, should prove of interest. " The programme of the Victoria College Swimminc Club for the present season is--.—February 3rd, 100yds hamcKcaip; Febvua-ry 10th, 50yds championship; February 17th, plunge; February 29fch, 220yds handicap (to be swum at Thorndon Baths). are all club events, and we are following the sporting rixlo of 'no entry fees, no prizes/ A trophy, presented by Mr J. AV. Joynt, will, however, bo awarded to the winner of the 50yds championship. We are really only feeling our way this year, and so are not attempting anything ambitious; moreover, the great majority of our members look upon swimming ao a sort of relaxation from other sports, tennis, cricket and athletics, so that no one need look to see records broken in any of our races." Tho club held a 50yds race, on Thursday last, when eight competitors catne forward —a very satisfactory nutnbor, all things considered. .F. A. de la. Mare, with a concession of 83ec, got home first. G. M, Cleghorn (3seo) being socond. The remainder of the field was so closely bunched that a third man could ,not be picked. Evidently the club's choice of a handicapp-er has been a happy one. JOTTINGS. The entrance sheet for events to be decided at the Swifts Club's carnival on February 12th, aire filling well. Everything points to a successful gala. For the 220yds teams handicap relay race the following ' have entered:—Carpenters, Y.M.C.A., Old Boys A, Old Boys B, and "N.Z. Times."

In the events for the Crouch cup points will be alloted as follow .—First 5, second 3, third 1. For tho championship of the club three events will, bo htoM. viz., 50yds, on March 7th; 100yds, on March 10th; and 220yds, on March 17th. Tho Thorndon Club held a 200 yards handicap last Wednesday evening, taking advantage of the high tide. The sea. had a slight chop, which, however, did not affect the swimmers to any great extent.

It was ths best race that has been seen in the Thorndon baths this season, the scratch and limit men being all together at the finish. Roberts. ■ who won with 20sec start, swam a winning race throughout, overhauling his men with ease, and winning by a yard. Healy just beat Allan for socond place, the Test of the field being bunched close behind. Allan, who has been training hard of late, swam strongly from start to and, with perseverance, should develop into a firstclass swimmer. A. AV. Smith looked a likely winner on paper, having a handsome start of 72sec, but faded away m the last lap.

The Wellington Club decided tie heats of a 100yds handicap at Te Aro baths last evening, twenty-five competitors starting. Eesult:— First heat—L. Silver (18seo), 1; AV. H. Pollock (19sec), 2; AV. G.
