FIRES

At about 2.15 a.m. yesterday the Fire Brigade was called to attend two outbreaks of fire—one at No. 30, Hopper street, and the oth.v to r<o. JB, Herald Street, Newtown. In Popper street the firo was found to havo broken out in a two-storied wooden building. The top floor at the rear of .'he building_was occupied by a plumber named H. Hanson as 'a workshop, and the space underneath by Messrs C. and A. Odlin,' timber and hardware merchants, as a stable. The fire had got a . good hold on the building when the brigade arrived, and it was found that four good draught horses had been burned to death. Two drays placed near by tho premises were found to be. damaged—one beyond repair. In regard to the . horses two of them were worth over .£l2O, that sum having been refused for them a short while ago. Hanson's workshop was quite burned out, and all the contents were destroyed. There was no insurance on the contents of the building. The buUding was insured in the Alliance Offico for ,£IOO. Hanson estimates his loss at .£250.
