The, barqiieutino Mary Isabel, which is well known in AVellington, arrived at Sydney on the 11th' instant, after a run of eleven days from AVhangape. Mr G. T. Niccol, of Auckland, has purchased' the steamer AA'ellington from the Northern Steamship Company. It is understood that a very low price was paid for the vessel. The AVellington was built in 1863 at Glasgow, and for several years traded for the Union Company between Dunedin and Onehunga. She was sold to the Northern Steamship Company in XSSI. The placing of the dredge John Townley upon the Gisborne slip for the halfyearly overhaul,. revealed that the vessel had been severely bumped, arid the oteel plate on the port side had been almost penetrated. The damage was aPpa reptly caused ■ by the fluke _ of the anchor of another vessel hanging just below the water-line, and was probably the result of a -collision occurring in berthing at some time when the crew were absent. * Mr J. M. Sohields, one of the three .general managers of the P. and 0. line, at the invitation of the chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board, was shown around the harbour on Saturday on the steamer Pitoitoi. The party consisted of Messrs A. J. Entrican, J. H. Gunson, J. B. Macfarlanc, A. Keyes and H. Bradney (members of the board), Mr Hamer (engineer), Mr W. C. Somers (of Russell and Somers, agents for the P. and O. steamers), and Mr R. A. Carr (to whoso influence when in London is mainly due the fact that the directors of the P. and O. Company decided to make Auckland the port of call). Messrs Johnston and Co. advise that it has been decided to dispatch the steamer Blenheim on a special trio to Motueka, sailing at 6 p.m. to-morrow.; The Scales liner Clan Macfarlane, which left Napier on Sunday morning for London and Antwerp, loaded 12,200 bales of wool and 1400 sacks of grain at AVellington, and about 3666 bales of wool at Napier. . .The coastal steamer Wairau left AVellington yesterday for Blackball to load a full cargo of timber for this port, where she is due back about Thursday next. The coastal steamer Gertie, which lias completed her overhaul, is expected to leave AVellington. to-day for AVestport. The Government training ship Amokura left AA’ellington at 4.30 p.m. yesterday for her Cook Strait and Marlborough Sounds cruise. The vessel anchored, in, AVoreer Bay for. the night, and will proceed to sea, this morning. The Dunedin “Star” says that it is not yet announced whether the Maitai, which is undergoing an overhaul, -will ho employed in the intercolonial.or A'unco over service. The AVestport Harbour Board’s suction dredge Rubi Seddon. is to bo brought off the patent, slip to-morrow afternoon or on Thursday. She will probably sail on Thursday for AA’estport. The trawler Countess and probably the Himitangi are to, go on the slip yvhriu the Rubi Seddon comes off. ~ Captain I{. Hart, of the coastal steamer Manaroa; has. been granted a fortnight’s holiday, and yesterday -Mr J. G. Gilbertson, mate of that vessel, took temporary command. The Marine Department received advice that the Hinemoa landed stores at Farewell Spit yesterday morning and sailed at 11 a.m. for. Stephen Island. If the vessel has already landed at the Brothers and Jackson Head she should arrive back at AA’ellington to-night or early .to-mor-row. The British India Company’s .steamer Ula is to got away from Wellington today for Lyttelton, with remainder of cargo from Calcutta. The New Zealand Shipping Company's chartered steamer Falls of Nith left AVellington last evening for Lyttelton and Bluff, to' complete Homeward loading. As the Patea Shipping Company’s steamer Kapuni ; is getting her boilers cleaned at AVellington, she will 'not leave hero until to-morrow for Patea.’ • , The Blackball Coal Company’s collier Ngahere, which left AVellington late last night for Greymouth, is due. hack here ' on Thursday with another full load of i coal. The Petone, which has just completed an extensive overhaul, is-to get away from AVellington this mornipg for Greymouth, and is duo back here on Friday. Mr AV. B. Mackle, engineer of the dredge John ,Townley, who left Gisborne for Glasgow to take-part in the construction of the dredge Mam at Messrs ! Simons Bros.’, Works, has, it is understood, accepted an appointment at Salt Lake City, United States. Regarding Australian traffic, the direc- f tors of the P. and O. Company point out in their last report that any develop- i ment that has occurred appears mostly ih the direction of third-class passengers, a business in which the P. and O. « Company did not at present participate, i The close connection between their S India, China and Australian passenger

services has had the effect of confining their mail steamers to first and second, saloon passenger traffic exclusively. The expenditure for the year showed an increase of upwards of XSO,OOQ. chiefly due to tho increased size and the more costly character of the ships now employed in the mail service, and to the higher speed at which the steamers have to bo driven in order to fulfil the conditions of the contract. Hi less than four years tho company’s coal disbursements have increased by .£IOO,OOO per annum, partly owing to advance in prices and partly to the other features alluded to. THE SYDNEY BOAT. The local office of the Union Company has been ’advised that the. AVarrimoo, which sailed from at 2 p.m. on Saturday for AVellington direct, is.bnnging 203 passengers for New Zealand ports. They comprise 105 saloon and 98 steerage. The vessel is due here early to-morrow morning. MORAYSHIRE DUE AT AUCKLAND. The Pederal-Houldcr-Shire liner Morayshire, from Liverpool, via - Sydney, passed Cape Maria at 5.15 a.m. yesterday on her way to Auckland. The vessel will berth at the northern port early this morning, -and should reach AVellington, about Monday next. M A MARI AT AUCKLAND. The -Shaw, Savill and Albion. Company’s steamer Mumari, which arrived at Auckland at daybreak yesterday from London, is expected to reach AA'ellington probably about Sunday or Monday next. THE ARAHURA. 'J.'lie Union Company’s steamer Arabura arrived at Greymouth at 11 a.m. yesterday from AVellington, via ports, and was to have sailed on tho return trip at midnight. Tho vessel is to leave Nelson at 10 a.m. to-morrow and Picton at 5.30 p.m., for AA'ellington, where she is due about 9.30 o’clock to-morrow night. NEAV-. PALMERSTON NORTH COMPANY. The manager of the newly-formed AVest Coast Steamship and Trading Company, Ltd., of Palmerston North, in response to inquiries, states :—“ AA'e have already commenced business, but as far as the coastal trade is concerned we will have to wait until our steamers are built, which will be about a matter,-of nine months.” KAITUNA FOR AUSTRALIA. The Union Company’s cargo steamer Kaituna, now discharging AVestport coal at AVellington. is to leave here to-mor-row for Kaipara to load timber for Sydney and Adelaide. RUAPEHU LEFT CAPETOWN. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s steamer Ruapehu, which left Plymouth on December 25th for AVellington and Lyttelton, resumed her voyage from Capetown last Saturday, due date. The vessel is due at Hobart about February 3rd, and at AVellington about February Bth. NAIRNSHIRE. ARRIVES TO-DAY. The Federal-Houlder-Shire liner-Nairn-shire is due at AVellington about 11 o’clock this morning from AA'nitara for Homeward loading. The vessel is to berth at the Glasgow wharf,, and is expected' to leave here-on Saturday for Timaru and Lyttelton to complete loading for Avonmouth and AVest of England ports., HARBOUR LIGHTS AND BUOYS. The Wellington harbour-master (Captain Johnston), in his annual report submitted to the board yesterday, includes reference to tho harbour lights and buoys as follows: ' The man-of-war buoy, which was lifted for renewal of moorings, was relaid in April last. Tho moorings hare been replaced by now ones of greater length, making the buoy more secure. The buoy boars .from the south extreme of the Glasgow wharf, north 67 degrees, east distance, 2060 foot in 63 feet L.AV. springs. The low-level light is situated on Pencarrow Point, the eastern side of the entrance to Port Nicholson, and. lighted by a AVigham patent three-wick lamp. As in-previous years it has given every satisfaction and is a great assistance to vessels, especially in thick or foggy weather. , Point Jerningham buoy, Lambtan Harbour, was lighted on October Ist, 1908, by a AA'igham patent lamp, showing a *»ed red light, visible all around. It' has burnt continuously throughout the year, and proved to be of great assistance to vessels approaching and leaving the wharve~s after dark. The coal-hulks’ mooring buoys, also all other buoys and moorings’in the harbour, have been overhauled, and are now in good condition. ; The life-saving appliances that arc placed on all buoys have been renewed. ' The launch Uta and boats, also all the plant belonging to the Harbour Pilot Service and Signal Stations, are in good order. PASSENGERS FROM ENGLAND. .
