THE KAIPARA’S DAIRY PRODUCE
WHAT OF ITS MARKET VALUE.
REWORKING BUTTER IMPRACTICABLE. , 1 In a telegram from Auckland concerning the cargo of the stranded Kaipara it is stated that the butter cargo will be reboxed. Probably, as the total butter cargo, 19,000 boxes, is all from Auckland factories, there may be some truth in the statement, though it will bo a huge task. The butter itself will' probably not be affected, but the moisture now in the wood pi the boxes may cause mould, and if shipped toJLondon as the packages came from the Kaipara this may seriously prejudice the sale of the produce. Of course if reboxed this risk will be averted. On the occasion of, the Turakina fire, when the' holds containing butter were flooded, the butter was affected with smoke. The butter was shipped to London, but the Government grade marks on the boxes were erased. That the salt water will not affect the butter is conclusively proved by the fact'that a northern butter factory situated near the sea coast uses the sea water for washing its butter, and the butter so washed is generally passed ■ as first grade. Sea water is decidedly preferable for bnttermaking to inferior iresh water. In the case of the Kaipara’s cheese this will only be affected if the rinds
have become soft, but even if the cheese themselves arc not injured they will require to be recased. The probability is that the cheese will not bo able to appear on the Home markets ns of choice quality. This, with the reported American shortage, will have a good effect on market values, and future shipments will thereby benefit. Following is the dairy produce on the Kaipara:—Cheese, from I’atca 4a.il cases; Wellington, JOGa cases; Bliifi, .(.T9 cases: Auckland, IGJ cases; total, 13,889 eases. Butter, Auckland, 19,000 boxes.
