CLYDE QUAY WHARF

TO BE COMPLETED NEXT MONTH. TOTAL PAYMENTS MADE. In Ill's annual report to the Wellington Harbour Board, the engineer, Air J. Marohbanks 1 , states. that the Clyde quay wharf should ho completed some time .next month. This wharf, which is being constructed throughout of reinforced concrete, is being built by Messrs J. McLean and Son. The contract was let in, October, 1907, the price being £30,755. The date of completion according to agreement was September 30th last. tip to that time payments amounting, to £17,611 had been made, leaving a liability of £13,144. • “The Work,”:says the engineer, in his annual report, “was, by direction of the board, stopped for a time, until information had been received as to the probable lasting qualities of reinforced concrete, so that the . contractor is entitled to an extension of time. Considerable difficulty has been experienced in getting the concrete thoroughly solid in some places, more particularly' at the intersections and junctions of braces, and also in the .longitudinal re'nforcem on ts, because of the small amount, of clearance between the bars. Work of this description should. I think, be executed by day* labour at a comparatively low speed. Slight alterations in details could then readily bo effected, or variations made from the design from time to time, if found advisable.”-
