Captain C. Post; who'was one of the assessors at the recent Magisterial_in-. quiry at Dunedin concerning the loss, of the Waikare, returned to Wellington on Saturday by the Mararoa. . Mr J. Downio who joined the Poherua as second officer on Saturday, passed his examination at Lyttelton on Thursday for foreign-going master's certificate. ' The Westport Coal Company's collier Canopns, which recently was overhauled at Port Chalmers, has had,the colour, of her hull changed from black to grey. Mr C. Hood Williams, secretary of the Lyttelton Harbour Board, who has been on' leave owing to severe illness, will resume duty at the beginning of next month."

While the Union Company's steamer Maraina was being berthed at Lyttelton On Friday morning a line fouled one of her propellers. It was impossible to free it from above water (says tho "Lyttelton Times"), and three or four men spent some strenuous hours diving down to the boss of the screw and cntting the rope free.

The Ripple, which returned to Lyttelton on Friday morning with a load of wool from the Chatham Islands, was to sail yesterday morning for Oainaru and Timaru. She is duo back at Lyttelton to-morrow to complete loading, and will lcavo the .same day for Wellington and Napier.

The Wairuna, which has been laid up at Auckland for a couple of weeks past, was rccommissioiied on Thursday, Captain J. -M. Drewette being appointed master of the vessel and Mir Morley chief officer.

Countess. now owned by. the Countess Trawling Companv, Ltd., Napier, formerly a ferry steajner in Wellington'harbour, arrived at Wellington frohl Napier last niglit .in order to go on the patent slip for Government inspection and general overhaul. The vessel left. Mr William Martin is mate and the. engineer is Mr C. Ross. The Countess has put in consistently | good work during the first twelve mouths of her new vocation.
