THE SLAUGHTERMEN'S DEMANDS
WHAT THE POSITION IS. INDUSTRIAL AGREEMENT TO BE MADE. The agreement which was arrived at on Friday evening between the employers and the executive of the New Zealand Slaughtermen's Federation (reported in Saturday's "Times") concerns only the meat works of the North Island and the Ne!6om and Marlborough districts. The Canterbury employees have independently made agreements with their employees on lines similar to those arrived at here. The terms of the settlement are to be embodied in an agreement which is to go straight to the Arbitration Court, and which will continue in force for a period of • three years v The function of the Court will be merely a formal proceeding in altering the settlement into an "industrial agreement." There will be no renewal of the contest when the matter is before the Court. The employers asked that at the expiration of the" three years the representatives of the workers 6hould use their endeavours to have the essential feat-ires of the award observed for an additional two years, as an agreement and not an award. The heads of the Slaughtermen's Federation have agreed to this request.
