OBITUARY

MR EDWARD SEAGAR. The "father" of the Wellington iron industry, Ma- < Edward Seagar, died on Saturday evning, about 8 o'clock, aged sixty-six years, death being duo to heart failure. Mr Seagar had not been in good health for some time, and his death was not altogether unexpected. Deceased founded the engineering firm known as the "Victoria Foundry," in. Manners and Victoria streets, and some of the principal ironfounders of this city recoived their early training under his skilful guidance. Mr Seagar was born in Southampton, Hempshire, England, 1 and came to Wellington by the ship Asterope in 1861 After working at his trade for some years he accepted the position of manactor for Mr E. W. Mills at the Lion Foundry, and frequently ,had as many as . 100 to 120 men under his control. He occupied this office for five years. Mr Seagar then commenced business on his own account in 1878 at the Victoria Foundry, and only gave up his leading control of the firm about two years ago, when he retired from active participation in the business. During the course of his lifetime Mr Seagar did-a great deal of shipbuilding, while he was an extensive manufacturer of mining machinery, receiving orders from various parts of New Zealand. Hei was one of the proprietors of the antimony mine at Endeavour Inlet, and acted as engineer for the company: A splendid furnace had been invented. and patented by him which had been found very effective in the treatment of antimony. Tho deceased was a director .of Messrs E. W. Mills and Co., the Now Zonland Candle Company, and the Opera House Company. Mr Seagar leaves a widow and grownup family. On© of his daughters is married to Mr R. Sanders, of the contract ing firm of Sanders Bros., and another i 9 married to Mr H. B. Mouraat, of the Bank of New South Wales staff at Westport. Mr Edward - Seagar, a son of deceased, is at present studying medicine at Edinburgh University. .
