LAWN TENNIS
SHOULD DEFAULTERS BE POSTED i>
A well attended special general mceb> iug of the New Zealand Lawn. Tennis Association was held last night, Mr J. O. Peacock presiding. Delegates also present wore Messrs T. A. Hunter, B. It. Keesing {Auckland), G. A. Hurley, J. W. M, Dart. E. Y. Badward (Wellington), J. A. B. Howe and M. Ross (Otago), P. Grady (Hawke’s Bay), J. J. Weir, M. B. Denniston (Taranaki), and H. Or. Didsbury (Nelson). The Wanganui Lawn. Tennis Association’s application for affiliation was ao cepted. It received tho endorsement of the Wellington Association, from which, the new district has bean created, and it vacs mentioned by Mr G. N. Goldie that the new association was composed of Id dlubs: with 67-1 playing members, with a probability of six or seven more clubs joining when tho association became operative.
Mr Hurley (Wellington) moved a lengthy resolution providing that no player shall bo allowed to play on the courts of any club of any affiliated association, or upon the courts under the control of any association, if his or her subscription, or other money due to any club of any affiliated association by such player, is unpaid by the 31st December, and that to enforce the rule effectively defaulters’ lists should be prepared annually for circulation amongst all the lawn tennis associations. The mover mentioned that some players were in the habit of running into arrears with one club : and then joining another. ■
The possibility of a "posted” player suing the association for libel upon th» publication of the list was mentioned, ■and Professor Hunter suggested that the motion was a cumbersome method of doing something that could easily be done by preventing defaulters playing in tho association's competitions. Let the Wellington Association experience the .working of its own rule before ft was applied throughout New Zealand. Mr Peacock agreed that there was a serious difficulty in regard to the legal aspect of the posting method. A treasurer of a local association might post a man because of ill-feeling, and leave others to escape scot free. The motion was lost on the voices. In the absence of the Canterbury de. legate, the following motion lapsed:— .“That it is advisable to admit over-sea plaj-ea-s outside, the Dominion free of all entrance fees to tournaments."
