A DISASTROUS STORM
HEAVY LOSSES BY WAIKAKAHI
SETTLERS,
The hailstorm which fell over a portion of the Waikakahi Settlement on Nov.* Year’s Eve was a disastrous one for those farmers whose crops stood in its wake, says tho " Camara Mail”. Several fields which formerly gave promise of great yield wero almost completely threshed out. Ono farmer who was expecting between forty and fifty bushels from his wheat has had his anticipations reduced to two bushels; while another whose expectations wer© lor forty will have to be satisfied with about eight. A paddock of oats was cut that under ordinary circumstances would have vielded thirty-five bushels, but so completely have threshing operations boon anticipated that the yield for commercial purposes will be about five bushels per acre. These are only typical cases, the experience of a large number of farmers having been along similar lines, Orchards were also subject to much damage, while windows were broken in all directions. Some of tho hailstone*, it is elated, measured two and a half inches through.
