BOWLING

NORTHERN ASSOCIATION'S TOURNEY. PECOBD MEETING'S SUCCESSFUL OPENING. YESTERDAY'S PLAY. Any ho viler who would ask for anything better in the way of weather than was provided yesterday for the opening panics of the Northern Bowling Association's annu*al tournament would be very hard indeed to satisfy. The day was beautiful, tho greens all round wore in first-class condition, and generally, everything pointed to a most successful tournament right through. As a rcsnlt of the adoption of the "open door policy"—which means that a club can now enter as many rinks as it pleases, instead of a restricted number—the entry is exceedingly heavy, and aji easy record. There aro 90 rinks and 126 pairs taking part in the tournament, the entries coming from 'nil the Wellington and suburban clubs, also from Palmerston North, Mastorton, Hawera, Gisborne, Turanganui, Pihama, Greenmeadows, Dannovirke, Feilding, Ponsonbr, Maitai, Manai'j, Remucra, Mount Eden, Eltham, Onehunga, Hastings, Wanganui, Opunake, Grey Lynn, Rocky Nook, Auckland, Stratford, Waverley, Carterton, Patea, Napier, Greytown, Picton, Carlton, Westport and Pahiatua. For tho rink matches, which were begun yesterday, play went on on tho AY'ellington (three sections), Thorndon (two ■sections), and Kelburne, Victoria, Newtown and Hutt greens (one section each). Three rounds of twenty-one heads were played, and occupied all the day. The whole of tho players, except those who had to go out to the Hutt, assembled at the Wellington green, for the opening ceremony, which wVis conducted by, tho president of tho association. Colonel R. J. Collins, 1.5.0. He remarked that he was quite sure that not only* Wellington bowlers, but Wellington citizens as well, would join in offering the visitors a very hearty welcome. (Hear, hear.) Bowling had mado great strides in and around Wellington of late ye'Jis, and now eight clubs were in full going order, with the possibility of two ox three more starting soon. As for the tournament, it was on its trial, in a way, being tho first to be held under the "open door" policy, which would be discussed at a mass meeting of bowlers to be hold on, Wednesday night. It would then bo open to the representatives of tho playing clubs to say whether the policy should be continued or not. Colonel Collins concluded by declaring the tournament open, after which Mrs Collins threw the first jack, amid loud cheers. Tho pUiyrm-ii engaged at tho out-side greens then •*< parted to their several scenes of by special trams. Special arrangements have been rjsfirfi.-;, for luncheon 'and other refrcelmieiits for the visitors. RINKS' SUCCESSES. As will be seen by the tables below, quite a fair number of rinks Viont through the day without a defeat. Several, on tho other hand, finished without a single win to credit. Among the latter was a rink which was runnerup in last week's Wellington Centre tournament, that slapped by Partita, of To Hiwi, themgh on this occasion he is playing with a different lead. There wore many close games one way and another, tho closest recorded being between Tester (Palmerston) and Hewat-(Pau.-.itiia), in the third round on the Wellington green. On tho head the scores were 20 all, and an ei-ti-n head_ hud to be played to decide. nnished one up, and took the game. The wins and losses of each skip in the tournament aro as shown:

Throe more rounds will bo played today, and to-morrow will be occupied with the lost three qualifying: rounds in, the rink matches. DETAILED SCORES. INTEE-STATE VISITS The failure of our association to return the visit due to Tasmania, and (with the rest of Australia) to New Zealand, sets one thinking that there is a screw loose somewhere in the system under which these teams are chosen (remarks a writer in the Sydney "Telegraph"). At present wo call for nominations of members willing to make up the team (if choßen), and this is necessary when playing away from homo; but what a number of good players there aro who would often like to join in these pleasant trips who cannot nominate because of the state of the exchequer. Of course, I know that at the same time there are many wealthy players who will not go because they became rich through being "careful," and are not going for an ocean journey to Tasmania to play bowls when they can have a sea trip to Manly for fourpenoe. Be this as it may, the time has come when a capitation fee should be imposed for the purpose of creating a fund that will enable the travelling expenses, at any rate, of teams leaving the State to bo paid by the association. What would this mean? A demand of 2s Gd per head upon members of metropolitan clubs alone would bring in about w£3lo per annum. This would provide sufficient for the purpose, and perhaps create a surplus.
