PLUNKET SHIELD MATCH. AUCKLAND BEATS CANTERBURY BY SEVEN WICKETS. FEESS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND, January 10. The conditions were puzzling when the thud day's play of the coutrat lor tne Pluuket Shield between the Auckland and Canterbury representatives, cricket teams was conimeneed this morning, 1h.3 constant rain of Saturday night and heavy rain of Sunday had deadened the .pitch and it was .doubtful how the wicket would play. The early morning was dull, but the sun scon appeared, and the wicket started to dry vapidly. When play commenced the atmosphere was very humid. The. batsmen found the wicket easy, and 25 runs were added to the overnight score of 213 for 9 wickets before Uoxshall was dismissed. The last wicket add?d 39 runs, making a total of 238. W. Carlton, the Canterbury professional, we.ut in first wicket down, and carried his bat out, with 88 to his credit. . Auckland Were faced with the task ot 101 rants, and many anxious eyes were east on the wicket. It was drying rapidly, and while fairly easy at the commencement of Auckland's innings it soon, became sticky. Boundaries were hard .to get owing to the outfield being dead. Auckland knocked up the required runs for the loss of three wickets, Hemus, who made 15 not out, ending the match ibv scoring two sixes- when 12 ware wanted. -Auckland thus won by seven wickets, and retains possession of the shield.
