The Finance Committee reported as 'follows—Dr. balance, December'loth, 1009, £4917 17s sd; expenditure for 'the month, £54 16s sd; receipts, £6o 9s Gd; balance, £4907 4s 4d. Accounts amounting to £63 4s 7d were passed for payment. In the course of a report the Ground (Committee statod that it had been decided to sell the privileges in connection, with the next show. Messrs KJ. C. Summerell, AV. Perry and H. Morrison were appointed a sub-com-mittee to deal with the plans for Soliway show grounds and buildings. A letter was received from the Caniterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association stating that it had been decided that tho conference to discuss -the frozen meat trade should be held at 'Christchurch on January 27th and 28th.

The chairman stated that the matter required very serious consideration by all moat growers in the _ Dominion. Men in the trade and visitors from England had from time to time *old us how New Zealand meat was treated at Home and it was time steps ■were taken in the matter. It seemed ■to him that combined action was necessary to control and regulate tho (supplies from New Zealand and to see that our produce was properly mar'koted.

Mr Morrison agreed with Mr Summerell and was of opinion that a representative should bo sent to attend the conference at Christohurch. Their representative would require to be a 'man of exceptional ability and he .moved that Mr AV. Perry represent tho association. Mr Perry said he would not be able •to get away and suggested Mr AV. E. ■BidwiU. . It was resolved that Mr Bidwill represent the association and .in the •event of his not being able to attend '.the chairman have power to appoint another. It was decided, on the suggostion of Mr Harold Welch, of Pakipaki, Hawke's Bay, to include a wire-fence jump in tho jumpers' competition at the next show. Staiith, C. C. Ross; Mauriceville, E. S. Mateon. DISTRICT NEWS. MASTERTON, January 9. The Pahiatua County Council held its monthly meeting on Saturday, there being present Councillors T. Hodgins (chairman), J. D. Piper, A. Ross, T. Quirk, S. Cornelius, S. Bolton, H. F. Coom, R. Smith. An, application to lease the Marima reserve was received from E. J. Chaffe. As the reserve had been granted to the council for recreation purposes by the Land Board, there was some opposition rto leasing it to a private individual. It was ultimately decided that the councillors for the riding, together with'the enmneer, should visit the reserve and submit a report to the council. It was decided to. wideri the AVoodville-Aohanga road opposite J. D. Piper's as soon as "thirds" were.available. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote informing the council that the Land Board had approved of the proposed expenditure of £373 16s 6d accrued "thirds" which would bo placed to the council's- credit shortly. The department wrote stating that £836 loan grant—being the Pahiatua Council's share of the cost of the lower gorge bridge—had been credited to the council.

The Masterton Racing Club on Saturday fixed the bookmakers' fees as' follow:—lnside, £2O 10s; outside, £lO 10s, including clerks. Mr Cameron wrote to the club accepting the position of starter.

Mr George Durham, an old and highly respected resident of Mangatainoka. died on Thursday, at the age of eighty years. Mr R. Dalzell has sold his farm of 130 acres at Ballance to Messrs Olson Bros.

Mr George Keast, formerly manager of the Rangiwahia Dairy Company, ■will succeed Mr Paget as manager of the Ballance Dairy Company's creamery at Scarborough. Mr E. A. Irwin, a prominent member of the Greytown Glee Club, who is leaving the district, has been presented with a handsome leather writing-desk by the members as a mark of esteem.

Harvesting is in full swing, and there is a scarcity of hands to do the work.

While motoring down the Matawhero cutting, Dr Collins and party met with an accident. Miss Collins was driving at the time, and on a horseman approaching made room for jiim to pass. One of the wheels went

over tho side of a culvert, and the car was capsized down the bank. The occupants were badly shaken aind bruised.

CARTERTON, January 9. Friday's supply of milk at the Grey town Dairy Factory was 2892 gallons.

The Greytown and Carterton bowling teams competing in the Northern Bowling Association's tournament at AVellington on Monday left for the ioity yesterday. Tho Rev. G. L. Stowell, of GreyJtown, is at present on a holiday visit w .Nelson. He will bo absent for a month.

At a special meeting of the Greytown Borough Council Thursday _ was decided upon as the statutory halfholiday for the ensuing period. The dog registration fees were fixed at os for all dogs except rabbiting, and cattle dogs, the fee for these being 2s Cd.

The railway employees at Cross Creek have decided to hold a picnic on the 23rd inst. Messrs Churchoiise {chairman), G. King (secretary), D. McLean (treasurer), Ogg, Burton, Hodges and Stevenson are the executive.

At Featherston during December rain fell on thirteen days, the total ■fall being 5.26 in. The greatest fall was 1.96 in on the 25th. The return card tourney between the employees of Toogood's Estate and members of Loyal Unity Lodge, is to take place on Thursday evening.

Through the necessary procedure not being taken in respect to the public holiday observed by the tradespeople of Greytown, Featherston and Martinborough on Monday• they had to observe fhe usual weekly half-holiday on Thursday. The five-year-old daughter of Mr R. Baillev. of Taratahi, while _ watching ihor father milking last night, was knocked'down by a cow, her thigh being dislocated and fractured.
