MR JOSEPH M'CABE

EMINENT AUTHOR AND LECTURER WILL VISIT NEW ZEALAND. Early in July this eminent literary man will arrive in Wellington and deliver a series of lectures on e ‘ Evolution " in the Town Hall. The lectures Lave been epdlcen of in the highest praise by the eminent scientists of Great Britain. They will be popular expositions of the evolutionary theories of the present, illustrated with magnificent limelight views. A small charge only will be made for admission. Mr McCabe will visit other important towns in New Zealand and deliver the same course of lectures. Very few can plead ignorance of the personality and work of the distinguished writer. He •was until about ten years ago an eminent clergyman in the Roman Catholic Church. Knowledge and conscience led him to other fields, and he became a Rationalist, and on behalf of' the Rationalist Press Association of London he hns issued translation after translation of most important French and German scientific and philosophic works into English. Besides this he is the author of a largo number of books dealing with the fundamental changes which 4 have taken place in religion at the beginning of the twentieth century. His translation of Professor Haeckel's ,l Riddle of the Universe" has had an unprecedented influence on the minds of the British people,, as it had had previously on the minds of the German oeonle. His further translation of Haeckel's " Evolution of Man" is a masterpiece of skill and patience. This all-important volume is now sold for one shilling, and has had during, the past three years hundreds of thousands of readers. Mr McCabe is a. charming personality and a most effective and lucid speaker. His visit ought to prove a memorable one in the history of scientific thought in Now Zealand and Australia.
