Egmont E.C.—Feb. 9, 10. Taranaki R.C.—Feb. 16. 17. Woodville' J.C.—Feb. 23, 24. NOTES AND COMMENTS [By "Auque."] Tke Wellington Pony and Galloway Racing Club will bold a meeting on the- Miramar racecourse this , afternoon. Good fields are engaged in the different events and interesting racing should take place. Special trams will run from Courtenay place at frequent intervals and as usual ladies are admitted free. Mr W. Tally, the well-known Wairarapa sportsman, contemplates retiring from tbe turf, and consequently will be disposing of his horses . in training. Excellent nominations-have been received for the annual meeting of the Foxton Boeing Cluib to-bo held on the 32nd and 24th inst. Mr Hearys’ weights are due on .Friday next. Obscurity, the Renown mo.ro that won a double at the. recent Porangahau meeting, has changed hands, its new owner being Mr B. J. White, Who has handed Obscurity over to F. Stowe to train. The fact of Waipahu not being nominated for the Boston Oup points tt) tho Conqueror mare being a starter in the Wellington Oup. Tine mare is doing well at Boston, and should give a creditable display on the nest occasion she sports silk. Amongst the candidates for jumping honours at the Foxton meeting is Royal Maid, who is reported to have given a good, exhibition of “lopping.” The mare is being trained by Alf. Shearsby, at Awapuni. Thetis, under Oannont’s tuition, continues to do well at Levin, and the Advance mare does not appear to boar any ill effects of the racing she has undergone recently. Mir Roe’s mare will be a competitor at the Foxton meeting. Acceptances for the Wellington Oup and Telegraph Handicap close on Friday, next, when tho weights for tho other events on the first day’s programme are due. Splendid acceptances have been received for the Pahiatua. Racing Club’s to take place on Wednesday and Thursday next; Interesting racing should take place. PeroHna, the • fashionably Englishbred mare by Persimmon—La Carolina, is receiving a thorough, preparation ot the hands of G. Brice in view of tho Wellington meeting. So far this mare has not reproduced in. public the'good form attributed to her on tbo training trades. '

Gold Top’ has been responsible for some excellent track, work on the old Hutt . racecourse, and the season should not bo much; further , advanced ere this daughter of. Soult earns something towards her oats account. ■ Clarence O’Neill has Conquestina very fit at Palmerston North. Mr Overton’s maro will sport silk at the Foxton meeting, where sho-should run well in .the sprint -events. -

. Attwood, tho Feilding trainer, who loves a, jumper,, ha«; nominated Lady Boris for tho Hurdles at Foxton. The mare is bred the way to make an efficient jumper, and any talents she may possess will soon be revealed under Attwood’s tuition.

Prior to the departure of the last American mail charges of a grave nature were threatened to bo made I against several prominent Brooklyn ■ police officers in connection with the arrest of nineteen bookmakers at a recent Gravesend meeting. As much as 1000 dollars a day is reported to have been paid to prominent officials of tho law arid order department for bookmaking protection at Sheephead Bay and Gravesend. The amount of “graft” money paid by the bookmakers is reported to be something enormous, one Brooklyn official alone being credited with getting over 1000 dollars a day. A New York paper has just discovered that an excessive interest in horses is responsible for a large number of the divorces and matrimonial calamities' that make such sad reading in tbe newspapers, and asks: “Why should the horse load men and women to forget their sacred conjugal obligations?” l One answer to this question was supplied by Professor J. A. Wesener, of, the University of Illinois, who pointed' out that the trouble is duo to an attraction between the live cells of the horse and certain morbid cells exist-, ing in persons who lead an idle and: unwholesome life and spend their time amusing themselves with horses rather than in some useful work. Thoughpossessed of a fortune of 60,000,000 dollars, Mr A. G. Vanderbilt’s domestic affairs have run anything but sraoothjy, a state of affairs which has been credited to the young millionaire’s love for horsos. What next will horses and horse-racing be blamed for ? Race meetings have heen arranged at Berlin for every Sunday from March to November, 1910. The Emperor has hitherto forbidden horse-racing in Berlin on Sundays, but has relaxed his command on finding that racecourses are unable to pay without the balding of Sunday meetings. THE WAIKANAE YEARLINGS The yearlings from tbe Waikanae stud to be sold at auction by , Messrs Tyne and Co. (of Christchurch) at Mr lan Duncan's private e tables, Thorudon quay, on tbe 25tb inst., are all fashionably bred. . ...... 1 The list comprises seven by St. Ambrose (imp.), two by Achilles, two by Martian, two by Conqueror, and one by Sir Laddo (imp.) With snob a variety of sires to choose from buyers should not find much difficulty in making a selection. St. Ambrose is beautifully bred, being by St. Simon from Ambleside, winner of the Two Thousand -Guineas. St, Leger, Ascot, Gold Cup, and • numerous other important races. St. Ambrose was a first-class performer, winning amongst other races the Williamstown Cup. of 1000 sows, carrying top . weight, 8.12, and (running out the mile and a quarter in record time. Of his first year’s foals, Ambrosian, Kina, Milan. St. Felix, and Sea Queen have already won races, and several others are highly spoken of. The yearlings to be offered have been well cared for and have wintered remarkably well. The doings of the Medallion home Achilles on the turf are too well-known to need recapitulation. He was undoubtedly one of the best performers that ever raced in New Zealand. Distance was no detriment to Achilles —he was equally at home in any races from four furlongs to two miles. One lot to be offered is a bay filly by Achilles from Bluewater, -consequently a half-sister to All Blue, which won the Nursery Handicap at the Hawke’s Bay meeting on Monday last. She is also a half-sister to Submarine,. who ran very prominently when carrying Mr E, J. Watt’s colours. Submarine was sold and taken to Australia, and ran some good races under tho changed, name- of Subterranean. This is said to be one of the best fillies ever sired by Achilles. Another is a bay colt by Martian from Allegresse, who is by Hotchkiss from Eopa’s full-sister Aleger. This yearling bears a typical resemblance to Danube, who won tbe Welcome Stakes at tho C.J.C. meeting, and the Fifteenth Royal Stakes at tho recent Auckland fixture. There will probably bo some keen rivalry for the -ownership of this promising colt. A brown filly from Enid has a splendid ponformation, her loins and quarters being perfect. From appearances one would be safe in predicting a successful turf career for this promising daughter of Sir Laddo. A bay colt, by St. Ambrose from Report is a - very -solid looking customer, and one that should bo capable of holding his own in any company. Being a late foal, be is not heavily engaged, and should engage the attention of Wairarapa buyers, where there ore no classic races on tbe various clubs’ programmes. A bay filly with black points by St. Ambrose from Ringlet, although a late foal and a little on tho small side, has lots of good points.. There should be gpod bidding tor this filly., , A very promising -colt is by Conqueror from Moresque, and as regards looks and conformation ho should be capable of giving a good account of himself on the; turf. .... Another promising brown colt by Achillea from Olivette exactly resembles his sire in conformation and style. The oolt is a beautiful mover and is endowed, with good temper, two factors which materially help to make a typical racehorse. „ A brown filly by Conqueror from Veronique is bigger than most of the Conquerors, and on appearances should certainly occupy a good position in tbo racing records „ . V . A brown colt by St. Ambrose from Marsellaise, related to two such good performers as Lord Soult and Sir. Antrim,' is sure to excite keen .competition. A neat brown filly by St. Ambrose from 1 Tamarina is well grown and lengthy and has splendid quartets. She is related to Carbine. V Probably one of tbe best lots is a ba.y colt by St. Ambrose from Seal. Ho is ono of the best movers in tho paddock at Waikanae and looks a real good galloper. ■ ■ - There is sure to be keen demand for the bay filly by Martian.from Two-Step. She -is a beautiful type of thoroughbred, and a typical Martian; The breeding is almost unequalled. . Two-Step cost 500 guineas as a ! yearling, but .she broke own in the Hostings Stakes, in which race she went out a hot favourite. .The filly is a late foal aud consequently has not-been-heavily engaged in classic events.

: A brown filly by St. Ambrose from Success, .half-sister to that good performer Kilwinning, is the best-looking of St. Ambrose’s stock seen for some time,' and' moves very freely. ‘Being bred on such good lines the filly should not be long ill coming to profit. A - bay. filly by St. Ambrose from Bonette was a Into foal, and a little on tbe small side. She is not heavily engaged. Notwithstanding hop smallness she is a likely-looking filly, and one that may be expected' to race well. , . , PAHIATUA ACCEETANCES .. ■ : The - following acceptances have been received for the Pahiatua Racing Chib’s annual meeting, commencing next Wednesday : HURDLES, of 60 sovsj one mile and three-quarters.—Silken Rein 10.13, Don
